Medised - How often is too often?

My DS 16 months usually wakes up at least once a night - usually a quick cuddle and a resettle works - if not, a dummy. But I'd say at least twice a week he cries uncontrollably and won't settle, doesn't want a cuddle, doesn't want a dummy.

On these occasions I usually administer one spoon (5 mls) of Medised which quietens him, and sends him off to sleep till morning. I justify it that if his teeth are hurting/he is snotty than I am treating that complaint but what if I am "drugging" him unecesarily? I don't want him to get used to being medicated to sleep.....

Does anyone else use medised/Calpol regularly? Am I being a bit heavy handed with it?

I have been using medised quite often for teething lately as last resort (3/4 times a week) dont like doing it but DD refuses medicine at all and calpol usually ends up on couch, carpet, walls anywhere apart from in her mouth. I have to put medised in bottle to disguise it. Any suggestions on other ways to give calpol instead? Sorry IamBlossom didnt mean to hijack

I would only use when medically needed, never just to help sleep.

I was given anti histamine for a rash I developed whilst on a new medication for my kidney.I only took it at night as that is when the itching started annoying me and it worked a treat plus I was out like a light for 9 hrs+.But when I didn't need it any more I found I was very agitated and couldn't sleep and my gp did say it was withdrawal it took about 2 weeks for sleep to go back to normal and I was knackered! It is only for colds not to be used as a general sleep aid although I understand the temptation when they don't settle

Newkid, no I don't use it every night, I think you misunderstood me. I haven't used it for about a month. Just when ds last had a cold (about 2 weeks before Christmas), I gave him a dose virtually every day, and bedtime seemed to be the time when he was feeling most ratty and sniffly each day. As a most fortunate coincidence it meant I didn't have to spend long getting him to sleep each night - which can take a large chunk out of my evening usually.
