30 mth old sleeps 14 hrs+...Is this OK?

Hello, paranoid fretful mumk here (again)
My 30 mth old bundle of fun sleeps 10-12 hrs at night but also wants a nap of about 2 hrs mid afternoon. He's been down for 21/2 hrs this aft. If I rouse him, he'll be so cranky so I'll leave him.
He's a big lad (18kgs and 105 cm+) and enjoys playing with lots of things but he just seems to 'breakdown' climbs into bed and sleeps for England. I'm concerned as he's due to start pre school in a fortnight and I don't want to leave them with a tired, cranky bundle in the morning.
Is this sleep requirement something to be worried about or should I value the quiet times?
Advice as always very much appreciated

yes, my dd is about the same age (born May 2003) and her sleep patterns are about the same
long may it continue I say

Do you know that a very large percentage of children under five in the UK are sleep deprived? This affects their behaviour, development and appitite (apparently!)... you've got no need to be paranoid he's sleeping the perfect amount of time!

appetite... blimey I try to say something intelligent and I can't even type the words out... proper

I am actually envious my dd who is 25 mth, dropped her daytime nap a few weeks ago, she does sleep 12-13 hrs at night...but make the most of that nap in the day! lol, as it is hard work when they don't want it no more and you have to entertain them ALL day with no break.

My son does about 11 hours at night and 1.5-2 in the day most days. He's the same age. Actually today he has slept for almost 3 but hes got a chest infection. I may have to wake him up soon, it won't be pretty.

Lucky you - dd dropped her afternoon nap at 21 months!

Seriously though, he obviously needs his sleep (and wow, he is a big lad). What time does he go to bed at night btw?

Mummymonster · 11/01/2006 12:17

He heads to bed between 7 and 8 pm Mercy but he summoned me at 9 last night and gave his dad the run around. He's napping as we speak.

Must admit I do use the quiet times to do things like laundry, ironing, gardening and mumsnetting!
