11mo fighting naps

My 11mo tends to wake for the day between 6.30-7am. By about half past 8 she is moaning and yawning so I try to get her in her cot to sleep by 9am and she'll have around 40mins - 1hr. Then she has a 2hr sleep at 1pm. She's usually asleep for the night just before 7pm.

For the past few weeks she has really been complaining when I put her down for her morning nap, either that or crawling round giddy. Quite often she just will not settle so then I have to get her up and she then whinges all morning.

It crossed my mind that she may be ready to drop this nap, but I know that she is tired! Also don't think its anything developmental as she has been crawling for a while and shows no inclination to walk anytime soon.

Any advice?? :)

hiya,

I was about to write the same post today about my 13mo DS! Hope you don't mind me also asking for help! The routine we follow is identical to yours (he was 2 months prem so corrected age around 11 months). Do you tend to put in the cot and leave waiting for her to wear herself put or do you sit and continually turn her over or lie her back down?

Hiya,

I tend to leave her if she is shouting or playing but if she becomes upset I go in and lay her down and whisperer 'its night nights' or something like that. What do you do?

I keep wondering whether to put her down later for morning nap but she seems exhausted by 9am but just does not want to go to sleep!!

Yes! 9am and exhausted! Sometimes I wish he would sleep longer in the morning and then just have one long nap after lunch.

I have tried 2 different ways - first I put him down, rubbed his forehead and give bunny and dummy then leave the room. I only went back in when I could hear lots of moving around on the monitor and a few yelps indicating he'd got stuck. I'd keep returning and place him back down until he slept - this can take 40 mins. (this would have suggested that he's not tired enough but so many yawns and eye rubs suggest otherwise)

Secondly I tried standing next to the cot and literally continued laying him down - many, many times but he got really upset by this so I gave up.

Today I left him for a few mins to roll around and then went back in and tucked him in - he fell straight to sleep. I then untucked him so he wouldn't get too hot (in a 2.5 tog bag) and he is pretty settled. Am hoping this may continue but have only tried it today!

I'm just wondering if this is what it'll be like from now on this is just a phase?! I miss those days of putting him down and leaving him to fall asleep peacefully!

I will try putting DD in a grobag for her naps and see if this helps. She has one at night and settles really well then!!

I don't know if its a phase but I really hope so. I'm just not sure what else to try..

my 10 1/2month old has just hit this phase. i'm using routine by she who should not be named on MN, and it says 30min nap at this age or 10-15mins if baby isn't settling well for other sleep/nap times. i give him till 9:30 (he's up at 6 ish) and if he hasn't slept then that's it till lunchtime, then early lunch and earlier to bed for lunchtime nap. ds1 had a morning nap and lunchtime nap till he was 18months!

it's always a fine line of getting them to bed when they're tired but not overtired isn't it?

Timeoutofmind · 11/12/2011 20:03

Yeah its really hard isn't it. I'm just gonna persevere with it and hope that its just a phase. It didn't work trying to delay her morning nap as predictably she was overtired!

Guess I could try limiting am sleep
