Training 10 week old to sleep on back - any advice?

I am very worried as my 10 week old DS is an absolute front sleeper and will not be persuaded to sleep on his back. From the very first night he refused to go to sleep on his back. If put down on his back he will happily look around and be interested in everything around him but won't go to sleep - instead he will start crying miserably once he's had enough. The difficult bit is that even when he is fast asleep and being put down on his back he will usually wake within minutes. He seems to startle himself by waving his arms around.
We have been practicing the lying on back during the days and sometimes if he's still very sleepy in the mornings he will go to sleep after ages and only if I hold his hands/arms so that he doesn't wake himself.
We have tried swaddling in the first few weeks but that didn't seem to make much of a difference.

I am very worried about SIDS and at my wits end as we can get no sleep whatsoever trying to get him to sleep on his back. He will happily sleep on his side next to me when co-sleeping but even then prefers the front. We otherwise don't really fall in the SIDS risk groups: non-smokers, strong baby, was 10 days over due date (so no premmy) and good birth weight of 8 1/2 pounds.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to "train" baby to sleep on his back??? (sorry about long and slightly frantic post)

I would just keep him on his side in bed with you, just make sure you co-sleep safely.

You can get a set of 'bumpers' that fit like Velcro either side of the baby. That way they can't roll. I had them for mine, but can't remember what you call them....someone will know

Google baby sleep positioner

Sorry, just realised your issue is more that he hates sleeping on his back and cries. That will keep him on his back but won't ensure he likes it! So bumping..

Thanks ladies, might just have to live with the fact that yes a front sleeper.
it's just made so much more difficult by peoples reactions when they hear he doesnt sleep on his back. Some people really manage to make you feel like you're actively killing your child. I know that it is better/safer/lower risk and wish he would but unless you know a magic trick ...hohum.
Here is to safe nights and good sleep.

My first DS was an absolute tummy sleeper - we fought it/didn't really realise fir the first 10 days when none of us really got any sleep at all (unless he was on DHs chest or feeding from me!). Then my childminder friend (whose son tummy slept) came over, put him on his front and he slept for 4 hours straight!! We put him on his tummy from then onwards, but bought an Angelcare monitor which senses movement and alarms if baby doesn't move/breathe/etc for 20 seconds. This seemed like a good compromise to me and I stopped stressing then, plus we all got some sleep! Good luck!
