Are we doing CIO by accident?!

Ok, this may be an odd question but DS (1) has stopped being fed to sleep (completely of his own accord!) so I've been experimenting with putting him down awake. For the last three nights, I've put him in the cot with a kiss and a 'goodnight sweetheart' and left the room. He has then wailed (more with outrage I think, rather than desolation) for about 15 seconds and then has either chatted to himself for a bit and then gone to sleep, or just gone quiet immediately. Although I'm pleased about this new shorter bedtime routine, I can't help worrying - it's so unusual for me to leave the room before he's asleep (either through feeding or rocking). I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance that I am doing the right thing? Should I be going back in straight away?

No y aren't

CIO is leaving a child to cry themselves to sleep without checking or comforting them

You DS sounds he is settling well - a quick cry of protest is not hours of crying

No you are doing exactly the right thing and doing your son a massive favour in learning how to soothe himself and settle to sleep.

If he was screaming for 3 hours or something that would be a bit different, a few minutes is fine imo!!!

I think if he is not overly upset then i wouldn't go back in he seems to be able to self settle already so would leave it how you are doing it now.

15 seconds sounds ok, and I am a co-sleeping, feed-to-sleep, sling wearing person. He's sorry you are going, but is obviously not THAT sorry! Grin

SOunds like the pair of you have reached a new stage and an arrangement that is working ok.

Fantastic, thanks all. Really appreciate the validation. Crossed fingers this continues!!!

Agree, 15 seconds sounds fine. My ds always either settled himself within 30 seconds or wasn't going to settle without me going back into him, so I never left him longer than that.

nethunsreject · 21/11/2011 21:01

Yeah, ds1 was the same as Rita's ds.

Ds2 on the other hand still likes to boob to sleep. Grin

You are not doing CIO, not by a loooong way!
