introducing a 'comfort item'

My 10mo loves her dummy, but she only has it for sleeps. I'm not thinking of getting rid of it just yet but I van foresee when I do that all hell will break loose.

When she's having her bedtime bottle she pulls at her hair and scratches her face because she is tired and I thought a comfort item would help with this

She has a few snuggles that I put in bed with her but she is really not bothered for them, preferring to play with them and not using them for comfort. Have also tried a blanket but again she is only bothered for her dummy!

What else could I try?

Watching with interest. For dummy, read thumb in our case.

Oh me too! I have a dummy lover and thumb sucker both under three.

DS 10 had a throw rug with tassels. He still used to twiddle a tassel under his nose to go to sleep. He also has a small toy elephant that he used to suck the trunk of when he was scared.
DD 7 had a monkey soft toy from a theme park. She used to twirl the tail through her fingers.
One thing to remember, make sure whatever you get is not limited edition or impossible to replace. We had 2 blankets, 5 monkeys, and swapped them for washing regularly.
You can guarantee the one time they really need their comfort object will be when they have just vomited all over itGrin. Have at least one to produce in this eventualitySmile

Muslins. Dd2 used to sleep with hers over her head Grin. Cheap and always replaceable.

Timeoutofmind · 20/11/2011 16:40

I have tried my DD with muslins and different blankets but she doesn't seem bothered for any of them - I've a sneaky suspicion its because the dummy is all she wants!! :)

I do have a throw with tassles though so will try her with this.

Do children not choose a comfort blanket/toy for themselves? Not sure it is something you can manufacture iyswim. In my experience given a choice of delightful range of pretty well made toys they always seem to choose the ugly/irreplaceable thing that came from a fairground/pound shop

inmysparetime · 20/11/2011 16:51

The point is to find a replacement as soon as the attachment begins to develop, rather than reach the vomit situation and panic that you need a replacement right now when you can guarantee there will be none left in the entire worldSmile

DS has two comforters. One is a cow and one is a tiger Hmm

They are made by Diinglisar and we got them from John Lewis.

inmysparetime · 21/11/2011 07:26

furrysausage get spares, for reasons outlined above, and swap them so none of them become too distinctively "loved"

furrysausage · 21/11/2011 09:26

inmysparetime thanks, at the moment he'll still sleep with anything bless him but no doubt that will change and I'll have a drawer full of soft furry things.
