At what age.....

did your little one drop daytime sleep all together? The average age seems to be at about 2. My daughter is nearly 17 months and is taking longer and longer to go to sleep at night. I put her down at 7 and she used to be asleep by 7.30. This has been gradually getting later and later. Last night was a world record for her! Put her down at 7.00 a normal.. she just lay there with her eyes open until 9.30pm!!! Not crying or anything but just laying there.

People have suggested that she may not need a daytime sleep (has 1 and a half - 2 hours in the day) anymore. Is this not too young?

At what age did your baby drop their daytime sleep?

Thanks :-)

DD2 is nearly 2 and still sleeps 2 hours in the afternoon, if that's any help. She sleeps about 11 hours at night too.

hunkermunker · 03/01/2006 20:30

DS is 21mo and will sleep between 2 and 4 hours during the day (usually about 3). IMO 17m is too young to stop napping - some children continue up till they go to school.

When does she have her sleep during the day?

crazydazy · 03/01/2006 20:30

DS was about 2 I think, I had to make him drop it as he too was staying up too late. Was a bit crabby for the first few days but then was sleeping like a baby from 7.00 and still is and he's 3.6 now.

blondehelen · 03/01/2006 20:30

my ds dropped his sleep at about 16 months. Slept much better at night after that!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 03/01/2006 20:31

DS1 dropped his daytime sleeps on his own by the time he was 18 months old. DS2 on the other hand was 2 at the end of November and still has 2hrs in the afternoon - although having said that he is still lying awake now (1/2hr after being put down) chatting happily to himself.....)

MarsLady · 03/01/2006 20:31

I want Franch's DD1.

Quite apart from being stunningly gorgeous, she sleeps 11 hours at night. If only DT1 knew what it meant to sleep. [sigh]

Tiasmummy · 03/01/2006 20:33

She sleeps after lunch at about 1 til around 2.30 or 3.00. I just cant think why she is taking so long to fall asleep at night! Today she was asleep at 8 so not too bad. Hopefully it is just a phase?...finger crossed... thanks for replying everbody :-)

DS can take a while to fall asleep at night - but is happy to chatter to himself so I don't worry about it.

bagpussinbootsmice · 03/01/2006 20:36

dd2 is 26mths and has a daytime nap only once or twice a week, and when she does I usually only let her nap for about 40-45 mins, otherwise she won't go down to sleep at 7.00 which is her bedtime.
She's been doing this btw since she was 22mths, and sleeps approx 12 hours at night.

harktheheraldAIMSMUMsings · 03/01/2006 20:38

Dd dropped daytime naps at around 15 months or so!

She then started sleeping so much better at night.

franch · 03/01/2006 20:39

Don't listen to Mars, both of her DTs are utterly gorgeous too

Tiasmummy · 03/01/2006 20:39

Wow Hark 15 months!! What time did she go to bed and what time does she wake up?

DD is 2.7, still has a daytime nap and goes to bed at 7. Most nights she will drop straight off, but there are some nights when we hear her an hour or more later. No crying, just talking to her dollies or singing or the occasional "Daddy I want to go downstairs right now" (she knows Daddy's a soft touch). As long as she isn't crying we just leave her to it.

What does she do if she doesn't have a sleep? Dd dropped the nap at about 3 but then had a few months of falling asleep on the sofa at 5pm, which meant she still didn't go to sleep at night. So, can your dd get through the day without a nap, without being horribly grumpy at teatime? If so, she's ready to drop it! Or, what if you wake her after 45 minutes - what happens then?

dd is 3.6 and starts nursery next week. I'm hoping she starts to need the occasional nap again...

Tiasmummy · 03/01/2006 21:19

She has never NOT had a daytime nap.. i am yet to experience that! But she has on the odd occasion only had 30-45mins sleep but which does seem to make her fall asleep slightly faster...but only slightly! lol!

Jess is 17 months, and has her sleep from 11/11.30 til 12.30/1pm - i dont let her have more than 1.5hrs and go and wake her if i have to.

She goes to bed at about 7pm and wakes at about 7am.... she does wake once in the night but we give her a drink and her dummy and walk out again.

I would suggest an earlier nap time and limiting it. HTH

Tiasmummy · 03/01/2006 22:29

An earlier nap time would not work as she wakes at around 7 and is just not tired before lunch time at all!

Sorry, after dropping naps she would sleep from about 7pm striaght through til about 8am.

She still sleeps really well, at 5, during the school holidays just now she has been sleeping until 11am!!!

Toothyboy · 04/01/2006 12:01

Ds (2.8) went from sleeping 2 - 2.5 hrs in the afternoon and still going to sleep by 8pm, without fussing until around 7am. Then started making loads of fuss and commotion from bedtime (7pm) until about 9pm; now we've dropped the daytime nap, he's out like a light within 10 minutes at 6.45 - 7pm.

He gets a bit grouchy just before teatime, but food perks him up a bit for an hour or so before his bath and the earlier going to sleep time is bliss (although I really miss my 2 hours in the afternoons!!)

We dropped the nap a couple of months ago when he was 2.6.
