When can babies sleep on their front?

DS is really colicky and the only way I can get him to sleep when he's bad is on his stomach. At the moment I settle him on my chest and lean back, but as soon as I try to transfer him to his back he wakes up (even if he stays in the same crunched up position, like in a bouncy chair)

Night isn't such a problem as he is generally on his side as we co sleep so I can feed lying down, but what about daytime naps? Anyone else have a front sleeper

DD has never slept on her back. She slept swaddled on her side until she could roll on to her front herself. I wouldn't have put her on to her front myself. She still mostly sleeps on her front on my shoulder for her naps, she wakes if I put her down.

DS did it himself from about 5.5 months - flipped over. So I left him to it and started putting him down on his front. Day naps - were mainly on me on his front or on his left hand side.

Once they can roll/find their own position it's fine to let them sleep on their fronts.

Guessing 9 weeks is too tiny then! Dammit. He's been really bad this evening, finally got him to sleep draped over my knee, but he woke up as soon as I turned him over. Going to be a long night!

my ds is 3 months old and i have been putting him to sleep on his tummy since he was 3 weeks. dont set the police on me!!! my mom (who has had 5 kids of her own and looked after her 7other grandchildren) just said to me when she saw me putting him to sleep on his back (per all the advice against sids etc) "that baby would love to sleep on his tummy im telling you" so we tried it and immediately his 4 hour night sleeps stretched to 6hrs, eventually 8hrs, then 10 hrs and he has now been sleeping 12 hrs a night since he was 5 weeks old.
once he is near to you (we live in an apt so he is always asleep in the same room as me - in his pram during the day and moses basket beside me at night) and he has good neck and head strength, then i would definitely give it a try. try it for his daytime naps initially so that you are sure he can turn his head himself if he needs to and that you get comfortable with it yourself too.

that's just my advice but hope it is of some help... good luck :)

My DD also slept on her side from day 1 and would sleep on her front often she refused to sleepon her back. We co-slept alot so was able to keep an eye on her st nightbut I did spend lots of time worrying about her.

Cot death peaks between 2 and 4 months (and something like 90% happen by 5 months) so that might be worth bearing in mind if you're talking about "when".

I did it early with dd but we have one of those breathing movement mats.
