Strange crying out in the night

DS is 22 months & normally sleeps pretty well.

Last night at about 9 he started crying out. He was pretty upset & needed a cuddle to calm down. I gave him a dose of calpol as unsure if he wasn't feeling well ( can't talk yet so couldn't tell me what the problem was) . 2 hours later he did it again, but didn't need a cuddle to calm just abit of shh & rubbed back in cot. After that I've lost count of the number of times I was up. Never as bad as the 1st time & even sometimes I never got as far as his room & he stopped of his own accord.

This morning he is absolutely fine! You wouldn't know he had any problems last night (apart from the exhausted looking mother by his side!)

Any ideas what this was? Nightmares/terrors?

I don't run into him at the slightest squeak, do you think that's ok?

Right, off to drink my coffee!

Sounds like bad dreams, yes. I think it's fair to see if he will go back to sleep by himself before going in, though I wouldn't leave him for long if he's distressed. Quite often when DS has this though it doesn't make much difference if I'm there or not because he's asleep and unaware - though talking seems to help, just saying "Hey, Mummy's here now, it's okay, you're safe" etc. Often now he talks in his sleep and normally he's saying he wants a toy or something! So the dreams could be less traumatising than they sound :)

Yes I didn't think my presence made much difference, sound similar to your DS. So could have a sleep talker, DH says random things in the night too, ear plugs maybe required in later life!
