Kept up at night by DP's jumping

DP has always been a bad sleeper, he used to have a lot of trouble falling asleep but now due to a new job etc he is falling asleep but while he's sleeping he has mini little fits (I can't think of a better word to describe it), his legs and arms will start shaking or twitching, or his whole body will jump up but he sleeps right through it - he only believed that it was happening when last night he woke himself up. We think it is stress related as it gets worse the more stressed he is. It doesn't affect his sleep but the problem is it keeps me awake! Any suggestions?

Are you married to my husband? He's done this all the time I've known him. He's a crap sleeper too and quite anxious.
Luckily I sleep heavily otherwise I don't think we'd have lasted this long.

Sorry that's not helpful.

I thought people might think I was mad for posting that, DP thought I was mad until he woke himself up, has your dh seen anyone about it? Please tell me it gets better, I've been hoping it goes away as he didn't always do it, although tbh we're in the process of him moving in so he's been staying with me almost every night so maybe he's always done it and I just notice it now that we share a bed every night!

He talks in his sleep too though so in between the mini seizures he says random phrases that make me laugh Grin so I can't stay mad at him for too long, he's just turned over, said 'rolley polley' to me then turned back again Confused

My DH hasn't seen anybody as it doesn't bother him (he's totally unaware like you say) and it only slightly bothers me as I'm almost always asleep before him.
I don't know what it is but I think it's worst when he's overtired. He also gets 'jumpy' legs while awake and REALLY fidgety if he's very tired.

toddlerama · 10/11/2011 08:42

DH twitches like this as he falls asleep but once he's in a deep sleep it does stop. I try and not respond at all so that I don't wake him up and start it all over again!

My DH also does this sometimes, and I read that it is when you fall asleep too quickly and your body doesn't have time to switch off the involuntary movements so you jump and twitch.

Like others have said it happens when DH is overtired.

Is he chasing cats? Grin

No, seriously. Has he seen a GP just to rule out Restless Leg Syndrome?

ihatecbeebies · 10/11/2011 17:48

If he was just jumping or twitching as he fell asleep that would be fine but it is through the night, it gets worse as he's fallen asleep. I also read something like that Jazz, that it is your nervous system shutting down as you fall asleep or something along those lines.

Bertie at first I thought you were kidding on but googled it and it sounds a lot like DP, when he gets tired he starts to move his legs about too, apparantely one of the most common underlying issues around RLS is lack of iron and he's always tired so we should maybe get some iron tablets for him to see if it calms down, thanks!
