Will moving from cot to bed resolve or create problems?

Ds has just turned 2. He used to settle fairly easily with us sitting with him next to cot. Now he refuses to go to sleep until he is completely exhausted. Sometimes I wonder if he'd settle better in a bed. I sometimes get the impression that cuddling my hand isn't enough and if the side was taken down I could give him a proper cuddle which might settle him better.
What's everyone else's experience of moving to a bed? I wonder if we can convince him a big boy bed with special duvet is somewhere he wants to stay.

I moved DS to a big boy bed a month or so before he turned 2, DD was then nearly 4 months, I wanted her to go into his cot. For a month or so before the move, I took the side off his cot so he could get used to it. Then we went on holiday where he had to sleep in an adult single bed, as there was only 1 cot and DD had to sleep in it. Then when he came home he went into his big boy bed (I put safety barriers on the sides). For the first couple of nights after a change, he would get really excited and fall out of bed a few times at night, and then things went back to normal and he slept fine all night. The bed is much nicer as I can sit with him on my lap in the evenings for his bedtime story and give him a big cuddle before he goes to sleep. DS is now 2.5 and still waits for me to come and get him out of bed in the morning even though he can climb out by himself! So didn't create any problems for us.

Thanks for your reply. I really like the idea of being able to sit on the bed with him for his stories. I think we'll experiment with different lighting in his room for a while, then if that doesn't work try out the bed.
