grobag virgin needs some advice

I never used a grobag or sleeping bag for my other two but for some reason I've just bought one for my 7 wk old. It is 2.5 tog and I know you aren't meant to use any other blankets with it, but does it really keep them warm? Mine says that he should be in it with just a vest and pj top. Apart from the fact that pj tops don't exist for small babies (they are all sleepsuits at this age), I'm sure he will freeze. Doesn't seem to have any padding on his top half either. Will someone tell me how these are meant to work, and whether you pay attention to their dressing recommendations or just bung them in in warm pyjamas??

Bit confused.

yes pph

codswallop · 26/10/2003 10:42

MIne has a sleep suit and a grobag oh and a vest too

Mind you in pph towers it might be chillier than at ours!

lucy123 · 26/10/2003 11:26

I use a sleeping bag plus vest and/or sleepsuit, and I leave an oil radiator on in her room on low all night. I sometimes do use a blanket too if it's really cold - those recommendations were obviously written for people with draght-free centrally-heated houses! (remember if you read all the recommendations they say baby's room should be something like 20C)

Stick with it though as they are marvellous - I am convinced that dd slept well from early on because she felt secure in her sleeping bag.

CountessDracula · 26/10/2003 12:16

PPH how warm is the nursery overnight? DD wears an all in one sleep suit with feet and long arms and a 2.5 tog bag and she never seems to get cold. Mind you she has plenty of natural padding Her room is usually between 19 and 21 degrees overnight.

princesspeahead · 26/10/2003 18:59

hmm. I think mine is more like 17 - 18. Obviously it dips if the heating isn't on all night. But the nursery has three external walls and two large windows on two of them so isn't the easiest to keep warm without the heating on all night.

But basically there appears to be a vote for sleepsuit and vest and not pyjama top. I shall try it when I've weaned him off a full swaddle - maybe start off at naptimes and see how he gets on.

Thank you!

Don't you find their hands get cold?

codswallop · 26/10/2003 20:38

yes but its normally in his Mouth!!

Chinchilla · 26/10/2003 20:52

My ds is currently wearing his grobag with a bodysuit, socks and pyjamas. It is about 21-22 degrees in his room, but gets colder at night (obviously ) He feels a little warm while the heating is on, but he has always been a little hot water bottle!

codswallop · 26/10/2003 20:55

wow! super toasty boy

Chinchilla · 26/10/2003 20:57

Not really! As I say, it gets cold in the night, and his radiator is only on very low.

bunnyrabbit · 26/10/2003 21:33

I put DS in a 2.5 tog bag with a sleepsuit. It's 19 degrees in his room and I also put a very thin cellular blanket accross the top. Not sure I know why... just to make me feel better I think.

I do find his hands are cold but the rest of him is warm...

gingernut · 26/10/2003 21:46

PPH, our ds's room is generally about the same temp as your ds's and I've always put him in 2.5 tog bag plus vest and sleepsuit (now vest and PJs) and he's been fine. Now he's in PJs I sometimes leave the bottoms off if it's a warmish night.

princesspeahead · 26/10/2003 21:48

I just think of myself under my 11.5 tog duvet and wonder why we think 2.5 tog is enough for the babies. ok, I admit I don't wear a nappy, a popper vest and an all in one sleepsuit with feet, but still....!

gingernut · 26/10/2003 22:01

PPH, I thought that too - but it does work, we've never found ds has been cold (unlike in the pre-grobag days when he kicked his covers off). It's something to do with the fact the grobag completely encloses them so keeping them warmer than a duvet would.

suzyj · 26/10/2003 22:51

pph, I thought that too! Our dd sleeps just like countess dracula's dd and has always had hot little legs when we unzip her in the morning. It must be working especially as she has no hesitation in waking us if anything else in her environment is not to her liking!!

codswallop · 28/10/2003 19:10

I refer ypou to my very same q on the 2.5 grobag thread.

princesspeahead · 29/10/2003 20:30

ahh, coddy, you are always one step ahead of me.
well first night out of the swaddle and into the grobag tonight, lets hope I don't have to post on "non-sleeping baby" thread tomorrow!
