When will my 1yr old sleep?

I am a 2nd time mom with a 6yr old daughter (always slept no problems) And now a 1yr old boy (he was 1 on 09.12) He started sleeping through from 10 weeks but this last 8-9 weeks he has started waking again. He goes to sleep awake fine but about 2am stands up in his cots and cries till I go in and lie him back down, I do this several times before he goes off to sleep but after about 1hr we start all over again. I don't want to leave him to cry as he wakes my daughter and as my hubby works nights I am turning into a zombie. I work full time so he goes to nursey and only sleeps for about 1-2 hours during the day. I have also noticed he seems grumpy during the day and is not eating as well as he used to so don't know if there is a link. He is a very affectionate boy but he is driving me mad, I need my sleep!!!

Has he got a night light? Perhaps he is getting night terrors and is afraid of the dark?

Pudda · 11/12/2005 22:20

Have tried both with and without the light but doesn't seem to make much difference, I have put him in bed with me when I have been desperate and he is a lot happier but I don't believe in co-sleeping. It is just frustrating, not sure whether to try just shutting the door and leave him to it and see if he will settle

pudda when does he nap in the day is it too early maybe? that he comes into a light sleep at 2am? what time does he go to bed?
i'd double check his routine in the nursery and is it consistent maybe.

hth, its terrible when the lack of sleep hits you and u have no time to catch up

Pudda · 11/12/2005 22:48

He usually goes to bed around 8.30 to 9pm. He usually sleeps before lunch if they can get him to if not straight after lunch he will go off. If he sleeps before lunch he won't sleep of an afternoon and wants to sleep about 6 but I do my best to keep him awake and will put him down earlier. Do you think a morning sleep is too much? I can't remember what my daughter did.

no pudda his sleep seems fine, it maybe a the hard option for oyu, sorry, but i presume he doesnt get a drink or anything when he wakes

my ds was like this at 8mths but he was constipated and i could feel his uncomfort in his tummy, it wouldnt be anything like that?

Pudda · 11/12/2005 22:59

No I haven't been giving him a drink in case he got into the habbit of waking for that. He never really has constipation, quite the opposite really. I just find it so frustrating and I'm not he most maternal person with much patience, I went to the docs last week but got fobbed off and told 'some kids just don't sleep well' moms and friends I've spoke to just tell me to bring him into my bed but surely that won't help?

it's a well-described developmental phenomenom; usually coincides with starting to walk and the simultaneous onset of separation anxiety. DS is doing the same thing ATM (he's 15mo). I've resorted to co-sleeping and at least he's getting a good night's sleep. I think I'll keep trying him off in his bed (he usually goes a few hours) and see if he naturally extends his time there as he gets older
