When do they grow out of the 45 minute nap thing?

ds started doing the 45 minute nap thing when he was about 3 months. When he woke up after 45min he would be grumpy as he was still tired. So I started always trying to re-settling him. After a while he would occassionally re-settle himself and do 1.5hrs, with persistence 1.5hrs eventually became the norm.
More recently (now nearly 6 months) he has started waking at the 45 min mark again. Initially I didn't bother re-settling him as it was only occasional. Now it appears to becoming the norm again. It is not too much of a bother if he only does this once in the day but if he does it twice he gets very grumpy.
So I guess my question is do I need to be consistent in re-settling him again to re-establish the pattern or is he likely to grow out of this soon?
I am sure some mums will say to go with the flow but I just find 45 min naps make the day so awkward. Feeds are out of sync with naps so even if you only want to pop up the shops you know you will need to be interrupted by either a feed or a nap. Also by late afternoon if has only had 3x45mins he will be too tired to make it to bedtime but refuses point blank to go down for a 4th nap.

My DS2 grew out of it after I started weaning I think as before this he would wake from nap at 10am for example and then have his b/f ..then get sleepy around 11.15 ish and go to sleep by about 11.30 and then bang on 45 mins would wake up as it had been over 2 hours since feed. Although he wasn't starving it was enough of a niggle to stop him going into the next sleep cycle (my theory anyway!) As soon as he had "lunch" added before the nap he began to sleep longer. I think I had to help him as well resettle and when I knew he was full up, clean nappy etc etc I would give him 5 -10 mins to resettle himself and it worked.

For my first son this was all fairly easy...I still have fun and games at 10 months with my second!

I like your theory futurity. I must admit I had a similar thought going round the back of my head. Only 10 days till he is 6 months. I did a lot of cooking at the weekend, freezer is now full of little ice cubes.

mh - mine grew out of it when he dropped his daytime naps completely at 1.5 yrs old - probably not what you wanted to hear!
Good luck though - starting solids could well be a complete turning point, my ds went from 20 min naps to 45 our so when he started eating solids.

geekgrrl - definitely not wanted I wanted to hear . Although I am by no means a Gina Ford schedule type person (not knocking those for who it works tho) I would love ds to have the long nap she sets in the middle of the day. I can't see how anyone who has a 45minute napper could possibly follow GF (although happy to hear from any who have managed).

DS is exclusively BF. He grew out of this at about 7 months - basically once he was more active. Once he was sitting up properly and bouncing onto all fours, he started napping twice a day for about 1.5 hours each (instead of 3X 45 mins).

I tried all the tricks to get him to extend beyond 45 mins, but clearly it's just what babies are supposed to do! (despite what that terrible Whsiperer woman says)

According to BW I 'should' be doing PUPD for the remainder of the 1.5hrs until he 'learns' to sleep for that time. Doesn't sound like much fun for either him or me - longer naps would be nice but I am not that desparate. Patting him through the transition is one thing, screaming baby quite another. ds has rolled from front to back 3 times in the last week so I think I will have to be patient before he is crawling enough to tire himself out enough to do the nice 1.5 hrs.

I think stick with the resettling, I went through those patches of dd1 waking after 45 mins but perservered with the resettling, sometimes I'd leave her 10-20 mins b4 going in and eventually she did start sleeping thru. Somedays I'd be just about to go in and she'd go bck to sleep.
I think she went thru another patch of it around 18 months too. Persist, my dd is 2 now and still has 1.5 lunch nap in her cot. Some of My friends babies i.e under 15 months will only sleep now in pushchair when out and really tired, but then ther's the theory that they don't need to sleep in the day, which I'm not so sure about. Happy persisting it will get better.
