14 week ds -Nightmare toget to bed at night!!! Please help?

My 14 week old ds seems to refuse to go sleep for daytime naps and even more so for bedtime!

ds has had seriously bad colic and only seems to settle when he gets rocked, but even cries at this!

Are trying to implement the pupd routine but are unsure of the do's and dont's!

Ds doesnt really have much of a routine due to the colic period, so think he gets overtired as only ever really naps for 20-40 mins at a time and gets tired very quickly when awake!

Anyone able to help?

I think 14 wks is too young for pupd, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. My advice is to do whatever settles him to sleep the best - be it rocking, feeding, walk in the pram, whatever - and don't worry about creating bad habits or establishing routines. It will stress you all out unnecessarily. Things will fall into place eventually

What is the pupd routine please

chipkid · 04/12/2005 19:46

pick up put down routine i think

chipkid · 04/12/2005 19:47

you pick them up and immediately put them down again-baby whisperer technique I think

Dp and i are stressing that he doesnt seem as happy as other babies of the same (or even younger) age!

Itjust feels like whenever ds getstired a whole battle starts as he doesnt seem to want to give in to sleep...And he is currently winning!

Is it normal for ds to wake up 20-40 mins after being put down for naps or even worse a nightime sleep?

A baby of this age shouldnt be awake for more than 2 hours at a time or they will get overtired which can make them unsettled and they will find it hard to go to sleep and stay asleep.

Here is a link to the babywhisperer website which explains about PU/PD for this age of baby.

LynseyM it truly sounds as if your lo is overtired and it is preventing them from going into a deep sleep. As they havent slept enough at the nap they get tired very quickly and are probably barely able to stay awake for more than an hour before getting crotchety again. A longer nap would probably sort out at least some of your lo's 'colic'

Seona1973 · 04/12/2005 20:14

sorry, just in case that last sentence gets taken the wrong way, I am not saying that your lo doesnt have colic. I am just suggesting that he may be displaying colic like behaviours because he is overtired.

LynseyM · 04/12/2005 21:04

Its ok, lo had colic but is without a doubt over the worst of it, i just think that as he has had it for so long, he doesnt understand how to fall asleep on his own.

Just had a look at the baby-whisperer link and tried the pupd technique for 3 month olds,

Took 35 mins to settle, but only had to pick ds up around 30-40 times!

Ds is definitely exhausted after an hour or so of being awake.

Ds definitely needs more and longer naps!

Ds just wants to be awake and take everything in!

its EASY - Eat (feed your lo) Activity (activity time for your lo) Sleep (nap/bedtime sleep) and You (time for You when your lo is asleep)

There are suggested schedules on that website too which vary depending on age i.e. a young baby will have a very short activity period and an older baby will be able to stay awake for a bit longer.
