My bubba is just 3months..he goes down between 7.30 -8.15 sleeps til 1 - 2.30 am. Alls well until he wakes for the first night feed. He is now in his cot, but I end up taking him back to our bed after the first night feed because he doesnt settle again for longer than an hour, and is easier to have him next to me. Its a blur after that, but it feels like he is waking and looking for boob every couple of hours..4 / 5.30 and 7am. Does anyone have any tips as to how i can reduce this cluster feeding in the early hours. Also the latest thing during the day..he feeds for about 10mins every2-3hrs, but starts googling up at me (very cute) and coming on and off the breast as tho its a game! I'm concerned he's not getting enough during the daytime, is 10 mins enough at this age, he used to be a gourmet 40 minute suckler at first? The aim is to reduce it to one waking in the night..that would be manageable.. is this unrealistic? H E L P!

4 threads! you are greedy

I'm sorry, I'm no good at sleeping advice. I did this with ds and he's still coming into our bed even though he's 2!

I do love waking up to his beautiful face rather than smelly DP.

You'll get loads of advice here I;m sure of it.

Good luck. I know what you're going through.

This thread is multiplying! 8 at the last count! Could you try putting him to bed a bit later, so that he will go to about 4 after the first feed? We've found it works to put babe to bed at 11, and she now goes right through. We started putting her to bed at 12, and she would go to about 5, which felt reasonable, and gave us a good stint of sleep. I imagine you don't go to bed at 7:30, so you miss out on his long sleep in his current pattern.

I think 10 minutes is fine. If he's putting on weight, is alert, and doing plenty of wet nappies then it's fine! You could try encouraging him to take more in the day to reduce the night feeding though.

Thanks guys!..and S O R R Y for the milllion entries, my return button must have stuck.
we used to put him to bed later, and he did sleep til 4, but he was miserable then, and i realise it was because he was overtired, and he sort of switched himself to this pattern..with our help.it is some consolation having the evenings together tho. I might just get on with it and hope he ventually sleeps longer naturallly (as if)

just to say I had v similar experience and to dinosaur too - ds would sleep his 'long block' (about 4-5 hours, occasionally 6 or 7) from early evening then wake every 2-3 hours or so. It seems entirely consistent with the development of sleep patterns at this age. I tried to modify it by waking at 10-11 for a feed and this sometimes meant only one night waking at around 3, but on the whole wasn't a great success. But it WILL get better, especially if you are on the lookout for signs that he is able to sleep longer. For me, this happened about 4-5 months after solids were started (some people will say that is coincidence)- basically his 'long sleep' just lengthened to 4, 5 then 6.... and helped with a bit of crying it out, he slept through pretty reliably from then. This bits hard though, you really want it to improve NOW.....hang on in there!!
