DS 10 months has at the moment 1 v short (20 mins or less nap at 9.30 am and then a longer, well anything between 40 mins and 1hr 40 mins after lunch 12.30ish. He doesn't show signs of being tired at the first nap, but if he doesn't make it til lunch time, noon. If he sleeps for 1/2 hr or more in the morning he will sleep at lunchtime but not for v long. I think I ought to cut out his morning nap and bring his lunch earlier, but I have been told that most babies have a morning nap until about 14 months. Has anyone done anything similar and what were the results. Last time he cut out a nap (late afternoon) I lived with months of him cutting his other naps short. Help please!

what time does he wake in the mornings?

compo · 25/11/2005 15:14

do you go out in the mornings? Perhaps he could sleep as and when in the car seat/pushchair and then just have an afternoon sleep in his cot at home?

Assuming he's up at about 7am ish then give him no more than 20 mins a couple of hours after he gets up an try his lunch at 11:30. I f that works then bring lunch nearer "lunchtime" v v slowly - like 5 mins a day.

Or ditch the morning nap and he'll get used to it, but you just might have a week or so of narkiness as he gets used to it. But then hopefully he'll sleep really well at lunchtim because of it.

All the best.

DS stopped his morning nap at around 10 months IIRC. We just dropped it completely (unless he nodded for 5 minutes while we were out in the car) and tried to keep active until lunchtime. Then it was a nap straight after lunch for a couple of hours, when previously it was about an hour and half. He slept batter at night too.

Thing is, it may not go as smoothly as you want it to straight away, so try and give it a few days.

He wakes I think at about 6 - 6.30am , he doesn't cry and we go in at about 6.45am. I do go out with him occasionally in the mornign and he does have v short nap in pushchair. He has never been the worlds greatest daytime napper, and i have worked really hard to make him have the sleep that he needs we do get to a stage where we can cope until bedtime - which is 6.30pm (early because he doesn't sleep that much during the day.) But recently things have not gone so well.

hmm

i was hoping you would say something like he wakes at 8am - i was going to say wake him earlier but this is not really viable if he wakes at 6!

what does he do if you put him down for a nap? does he cry? how long do you leave him?

the only advice i can think of is go out and about during the morning, keep him awake and then get home, give him lunch (even if its only 1130 or so) and then put him to bed

is he really active? does he crawl about a lot, or is he happier sitting on your knee or the floor playing?

my 13 month old has gone from not napping much during the day to having a massive nap (2 hrs) in the afternoon, and this happened when she starting walking at 12mths (and so therefore never ever sits down or crawls any more and gets really tired)

lots of luck x

Try getting him to bed a bit later in the evening?

suss · 25/11/2005 19:47

I think he is waking early in the morning because he knows he is getting a nap soon after he wakes, good lord I couldn't put him to bed later sometimes its really hard work to get him to 6.30pm. We get up early anyway as its the only time my husband can see DB during the day, he gets home too late. I am going to go for it, his night time sleep is disturbed and his afternoon nap is so erratic it can't actually make anything much worse!

Youre right there, so you might as well try to change it to want you want it to be and work round that.

Yesterday was first day without a morning nap, it was fine and he slept for 1hr 30 mins at 12noon, and he slept until about 6.40am, not waking once during the night! Today not so good only napped for about 50 mins at 12.15, which made bedtime v hairy as I had extremely tired LO who didn't even want story (unusual for him), but he has stopped wingeing all morning, which he was doing when he was having a nap. I am going to give it a few more days and see what happens. Thanks guys for all your help.
