when I read the title before I got to the content of your message, my reaction of course, is that you can't! Your poor ds

Could you perhaps try and trick him into thinking it's milk by giving warm water?

are you sure he needs to go the whole night without calories? Once the sickness bugs are thoroughly starved out (which should only be about 2-3 hours after they last vommitted) they should be able to start keeping things down. Once water stays down ok, most other things will.

He might actually sleep quite well, these bugs sometimes wear them out and they don't always feel that hungry.

Once he is hungry and can keep something down you could offer him plain biscuits just to keep him going. I used to stop all dairy but give biscuits or plain, bland meals e.g. chicken and rice (I used baby rice when ds was little) or pasta.

I presume you were told to starve him by a doctor. Any particular reason? I was told not to by NHS Direct. I found ds1 tended to starve himself actually, until he felt like eating again which was usually when the worst was over.

Hope he's better soon.

well... I like the advice in Chris Green's book. Keep giving them small sips of water so they don't dehydrate. When you suspect they aren't going to sick it up, give them some big drinks of water. If that keeps down for at least 1 hour, the bug is probably clear & you can try a small amount of food. It doesn't matter what food (fruit or milk or toast or meat, it barely matters what), just keep it a small amount. If that's still down 1-2 hours later then the bug is gone & they can start to eat normally.

Works for us; I feel like an expert. I can clear a tummy bug in about 3-6 hours nowadays (but in the past, when I did the wrong things, it sometimes took days ).
