Seriously need to get your DH to let you have a lie in then, he must get some days off.

babyrose · 15/06/2011 17:56

he has weekends but he gets up early with us or we do a sunday swap.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/06/2011 18:05

Whats a Sunday Swap?

We take it in turns to get up, is that something that could work for you?

The other thing is what are his naps like in the day? DS that is not DH Grin

babyrose · 15/06/2011 18:10

we both get up on sat and i get a longer lie on sunday.
he naps well during the day two naps one of an hour and then half hour or two two hour naps. recently we have only been on one nap. maybe thats what is messing him up.

According to Dr Sears, from 12 months they need one nap of 1 to 2 hours and I'd say that was about right. A sleep cycle is 45 mins so you could try letting him have 45 mins in the morning and again in the afternoon or try 1.5 hours in the afternoon and see if that works.

Cutting down on his naps might be the answer. It may be short term pain for long term gain.

babyrose · 15/06/2011 19:44

he is very very active, he doesnt stop all day! he did only sleep for 1hr 15 today so fingers crossed for tonight! when he had two naps one day 50 mins each he slept the whole night maybe this is the answer.

To be honest I think you just have an early waker. My ds did it for more than 2 1/2 years but eventually grew out of it. Do you work? When I think back on it now, I don't know how I coped with my ft job but got through it somehow and you will too.
I tried to go to bed not long after my ds (not great for your social life but quite good for your sanity). Often dp and I were tucked up in bed by 9.30!
I think every child has one or two 'issues'. Yes, my son woke up early for nearly 3 years but I have not had to worry about his eating/language development/clinginess/potty training etc. No baby can be perfect at everything!!

babyrose · 15/06/2011 20:10

he sleeps for 11-12 hrs per night. no i dont work, i couldnt imagine trying to work and have a rubbish sleep! what was happening with ure lo chr0nic?

Lastnight was rubbish, he woke when I came to bed and wouldn't settle. He has been screaming when he wakes at night recently. He got his jags, been at the hospital with a fever and a rash

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/06/2011 08:12

baby have you been to hospital in the night? How are you both now?

babyrose · 16/06/2011 08:48

it was last wk we went to the hospital, i think it was the jags that caused the fever, but best to check these things. something has changed he never used to be like this. he was up at 5:20 this morning. yuck!

Like chronic says though he could just be an early riser. DS was like that too at the same age and its really tough isn't it. When he was 2.3 we bought him a clock and taught him to read 7 o'clock. He still woke us up but we used to send him back to his room till 7am which meant we could doze for a bit.

He was potty trained at 2.2, could read at 4 and is a bright, happy, socialable 7. Things will get better as he gets older.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/06/2011 09:43

and I think the NCSS has some information on getting them to sleep longer in the mornings.

babyrose · 16/06/2011 10:32

he just went for a nap there (me 2) 30 mins wasnt so great. when he sleeps in beside us he sleeps til 7 or 8 but just not in his own cot. he is really clingy at the moment aswell.

I guess gradual retreat does work for some, especially if recommended by Millpond for parents who don't want to do CC. No personal experience though I'm afraid!we have just done CC.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/06/2011 10:52

If he was at the hospital last week and is clingy at the mo he may be unwell and no decent "sleep expert" would recommend changing this at this time.

If he sleeps till 7 or 8 with you would you be able to cope with that until you move and then tackle it when there is another bedroom and he is feeling better?

babyrose · 16/06/2011 11:17

he has been less grumpy the last couple of days during the day but wakes up screaming. the doctors didnt seem to think there was anything wrong with him, when his temperature went down he was better so they let us go home.

i thought it would be harder to tackle his sleeping problems when he got older and bigger so iwas planning on making a start just now. but i suppose it wouldnt do any harm to leave things until we settled properly.

OP posts:
babyrose · 16/06/2011 20:40

he is very overtired, thats what we think. short naps etc must have been going to one nap. early bed for him tonight.

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 17/06/2011 09:21

Tackling sleep issues isn't harder as they get older, in my experience it is easier as you can reason with them more and they are more independent.

If you can live with it for now, then tackle it when you are all more settled that might be easier.

As for the naps, ita always hard when they start going from two naps to one. Try not to let him have more than 2 hours over the day though as this may be contributing to his early wakings.

What I found helped with DD too was to fill her up completely before bed. She had tea and pudding at 5 then a bath at 6.30. While she was in the bath I used to shovel in some ready brek or weetabix with some fruit in it. Then she had a feed at 7.

babyrose · 17/06/2011 17:22

he had two naps yesterday total of 1hr 50 and he slept til half 5 in his own cot! yipee!! he had two sleeps today 1 hr each, we done this last time and at least three nights of the wk he slept through.

ive got the book and started taking notes maybe this will give us a better idea of how things are looking. did you find a huge difference with night sleeps?

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 17/06/2011 18:40

Yeah, I did actually and it helped me realise that not every other child is sleeping through and helped me deal with the bad bits.

If you want some good news, DS was an awful sleeper, sounds much like your DS but was a dream to potty train.

babyrose · 20/06/2011 19:09

he seems to just sleep through when he feels like it i think! ive got a few plans up my sleeve with the new book starting it tonight. fingers crossed!(hmm)

ive been dreading potty training lets hope that goes ok.
