2.3yr old in big boy bed refusing to sleep (for mummy)

He moved to his new room about 3 months ago. At first everything was fine and he went to sleep if I promised to come back in 10 mins to check him. I always did, he was generally asleep abd always on 2nd or 3rd visit.

Now after story 3 (last one, then mummy goes, will be back in 10 etc), he is sitting up, getting out of bed, 'drink', 'sleep on mummy', 'sleep on floor'...
He has been going to sleep fine if I finish last story and sit quietly; normally 5 mins or so.

However, I am 37 weeks with dc2, getting tired and need to know he will go to sleep when I have baby too.

Tonight, for second time I gave up and left him shouting at the door (stairgate). He was not upset, if he was I would have gone to him. Last time ge went to sleep on the floor. This time he took himself off to bed, still shouting.

Tell me this is the right thing to do. He us a little boy whose mummy is going to have to be shared soon, and i've not been able to play as much as cumbersome and tired.

I think you're doing the right thing... children adapt SO quickly and if you remain consistent he'll soon realise that there isn't any point shouting and therefore "should " just go to sleep.

I really hope it works out for you... I've been really lucky with my toddler that she's quite happy in her big bed (never slept well as a baby though!), but I know if she does start resisting I would just stick to my guns - they learn very quickly.

Good luck and congratulations - hope everything goes well.

Also - you're better getting it sorted now before baby comes otherwise he might associate it with the new baby.

Good luck

Thank you! He was the same last night and then today was resisting a nap so I left him to it. He didn't nap but could hardly keep his eyes open tonight wand told me to 'stop stop' Reading a story... So he could go to sleep.

Am going to keep being tough, or drop naps as required!

You are doing the right thing. We are in the same situation and I decided tonight I will drop daytime nap as bed times were becoming impossible. I just think you need to be consistant in what you decide to do and he will soon get the message.

Dropping the nap works wonders for a quick easy bedtime. My ds is 2.3 and now goes straight to sleep. Had been sitting in his room for the last 4 months and trying to withdraw while he chatted to me as went to sleep - it was all to do with transitioning to no nap. So pleased not to have done controlled crying etc... Far far better than a battle....

He's having a nap today but going to gently wake him after 1 hr (usually has up to 2)...

Thanks everyone!!
