travel cot

we spend a substantial part of the month at my parents. at present my four month old sleeps in a crib - which he is quickly outgrowing. also it's a swinging one which he doesn't like much now.

i thought i'd get a travel cot and set it up in my parents room as a permanent solution.

any recommendations?

Get one with a bassinet so you don't have to drop your sleeping baby in.

If you can possibly afford it/have space there get a duplicate of whatever he will sleep in at home - my daughter sleeps dreadfully in her travel cot, as do many of her friends. Makes sense, they are far less comfortable IMHO.

You can buy a proper mattress for your travel cot from the Baby Mattress Company babymattressesonline.co.uk/welcome.html

I bought a Red Kite travel cot which I'm really pleased with - got it for £35 reduced from around £50, and bought a proper mattress for it as Fantail recommends. DD sleeps just as well in it as in her bed. Super easy to put up too.

I second the Red Kite, mine was from Asda and just £25. I know you can get proper mattresses but I just use a folded duvet with a fitted sheet over the top. DD (7 month) takes most of her naps in it. Definitely one of our 'best buys'.

Ok, I DO NOT wish to freak anyone out with this but I would not buy a proper mattress for a travel cot. My Step Mother and Dad did this for my brother as they were moving house. They went to Mothercare and asked if this was ok and they said yes. Then sometime later they found my brother wedged with his nose down the side and he was blue. They only just got to him in time. Because of this incident mothercare changed their training and now will not sell a proper mattress for a travel cot. I guess it is because of soft sides + soft mattress = space for baby to wedge? TBH I would imagine for older babies who can roll well its fine - but there is no way I'd do it for a newborn.

Zimm I'd heard this too. Good advice. So glad to hear you brother was ok.

We've got a little life arc 2 which we love and still use for the 3 year old (we've got 2 cots now!). Its also great for camping and not as big and heavy as traditional travel cots so good for planes.

The reason I like it so much at the moment is when dd2 is howling and needing reassurance to sleep, i have just lain on floor next to the cot and patted/stroked etc. Much better than bending over the travel cot to do it, and its much easier than getting them out of the cot, and then either having them in your bed, or needing to put them back to cot when asleep. It also has a black out bit to make darker and can be good for playing in in the sun...

Keeping a watch on this as i was going to ask the same thing...

I second the little life arc 2. I've used it on holiday, visiting friends and relatives for naps and overnight. So lightweight and compact, took it as hand luggage on the plane. DD sleeps like a dream in it...infact she slept through the night which is unheard of at home. Also doubles as a great sun tent to keep babies in the shade.

I would also recommend the Littlelife 'tent'. I use it with my 7mo DS for naps when visiting friends and family and he really likes it. In fact he often naps better in it than in his cot at home Hmm We will be taking it camping this summer and on holiday too. I find it really easy to put up/down and it is SO light and easy to transport.
