Nearly 6 week old doesn't nap in the day...

...except when she's in her pram / on the tube / bus / in the car.

Which means that when we're at home for the day (rare, I generally do something every day - partly to get us out of the house, and partly because I know she'll nap) - she's awake most of the day.

For example, yesterday - fed at 4.30am, 8am and then DD was awake from 10.30am until 5.30pm, then 7.30pm until 1am (when DP finally rocked her to sleep).

She doesn't particularly yell or scream - she'll quite happily sit in her chair (a newborn one) / lie on a blanket on the floor / in a baby gym for hours.

She can however, get fussy on the breast from about 7pm, by which I mean, I do a lot of swapping breasts, she gets quite 'angry' and will claw and hit a bit.

So my questions are:

1/ surely she must be getting over-tired on the days when we're home all day? Although she seems to be happy sitting and staring at things.

2/ and, would you leave her to be awake and happy as she is, or try to 'force' a nap on her? It feels counterproductive to me.

Thank you!

I'd leave her as she is. I'd still go out every day so she can have a bit of a kip so she does not get too over-tired. Remember they change their behaviour very quickly at this age. So she might end up falling asleep on her chair like my LO does (as long as the environment is fairly quiet).

Yes - I'm still experimenting with daytimes and activities, what she likes and doesn't. Staying in all day seems to be a no-no - lesson learned, won't try it again - it doesn't me or her. Looks like we're both shufflebottoms. Thanks for your reply.

Mine goes ape if we don't go out. Always did. Forces me to get bum off the sofa!

Mine was like that too, asleep when out and awake the moment you come in the door! Around 8-10 weeks she started staying asleep in the pram after having been out, and from 3 months or so she started napping in the pram without going out. They change so much - go out in the fresh air and enjoy those precious months!
