At what age did your dc stop their daytime naps completely?

Just that really Smile
It's getting harder & harder to get my 20 month dd to nap (she will in the car!) She has been having 1-2 hours from about 1-3pm for a while now, and I don't feel that we are ready to stop naps completely yet (well I'm definately not Grin)
Just wondered what everyone elses experiences were...

Hello, my dd1 had afternoon naps until she was 3, but dd2 refused to nap from from about 20 months and i gave up trying before 24 months! She's fine but does get tired/irritable if we've had a busy day and will fall asleep in the car if she's really tired but then wont go to sleep well at night, so i try to avoid car naps if possible! Grin i try to get her in to bed by 6.30pm and she will then sleep for about 12 hours. Smile

DC1 - gradually missed days, then stopped completely at almost 3, though will fall asleep in car or occasionally on sofa aged 4.

DC2 - has never been a fan of the extended afternoon nap. Will doze off in his buggy. Still crap sleeper at night aged nearly 2.

Anywhere between 18 months and 3.5 seems pretty average.

DD1 4 ish but will still take herself off sometimes now (4.5)
DD1 2.5 and never goes to bed now (2.9) but will nap in the car

EllieG · 15/05/2011 22:33

About 2.5. She was never much of a one for sleeping in the day though (or at night for that matter either). After age about 2 if she had a big nap in the day would be up til all hours, so it just got less and less until she stopped it herself.

Parietal · 15/05/2011 22:40

My DD still naps sometimes at 3y3m. There have been times when she seemed to be dropping the nap but we kept offering the chance to nap (ie take her to bed, read story and tuck her in, wait 15 mins) and a week later she'd be back to good naps. So if you need the break, I think it is worth persisting.

Thank you everyone for the experiences and advice, we shall stick with it and see how we get on :) hopefully she will continue napping for a while yet...

DS - 23 months is still having a 1-2 hour nap every afternoon and I'm hoping to keep that going as long as possible!! Grin

His record is 3 1/2 hours but that was a one off!

debka · 16/05/2011 11:46

DD1 (2.2) went on a nap strike a few weeks ago, but I kept putting her down and she has started sleeping again. I would persevere, if she doesn't sleep, at least she has a quiet time and you have a bit of time without her too.

dycey · 16/05/2011 13:32

I have to take ds 27 months for a walk in buggy. If I didn't do this he would not sleep. Maybe I should stop? As his night is not long and bedtime is late. Been thinking it is my bad habit but maybe he is ready to give up nap? Takes 5 minute walk around the block though.

BsshBossh · 16/05/2011 14:26

22 or 23 months. Since then she's on the go from 7 till 7. The upside is she settles to sleep immediately (often falling asleep when I'm still reading her a story) and sleeps like a log until morning.

Asinine · 16/05/2011 14:27

I still have mine thoughSmile

TheVisitor · 16/05/2011 14:29

DS1 was 18 months, but he thought sleep was for wimps anyway. The triplets stopped napping in the summer holidays just before starting school, so 4 1/2!

aStarInStrangeways · 16/05/2011 14:35

DS was about 2.2 (aged 1-2, he was having glorious 2-2.5hr lunchtime naps). I was so not ready for him to give up his nap and, without wanting to sound too wanky about it, did go through a period of genuine mourning Grin It just makes the day so long, you have no time to regroup or set up the afternoon's activity - I really floundered whereas he adjusted quite quickly.

It did take him a few weeks of vile grumpiness to adjust though, but on the upside he is an excellent night sleeper. If he happens to fall asleep in the day any time after about 11am (e.g. on car journey), he is up till all hours, whereas usually he goes to bed at about 7.30pm and sleeps all night.

Having said that, am now 29 weeks pregnant and how I wish he would have the occasional daytime sleep when I need one.

ilovedjasondonovan · 16/05/2011 14:38

DD1 - 19 months, just a short one (30 mins) every 3-4 days for a month after this.

DD2 - 17 months

The up side of this early nap drop is they both went to bed nice and tired and I got my evenings back.

jetmonkey · 16/05/2011 17:35

Thanks everyone again!

After 2 days of no naps, today she has been really grumpy Sad she slept in the car on the way home from a trip out, but has been grumpy since and I am looking at her now sitting in her high chair and she is nearly falling asleep!

So I think she does still need naps and I will persevere - she mostly sleeps well at night so I guess that is the upside as people have suggested Smile

I have a nineteen year old who still naps Wink

Sounds like she could still do with one.

jetmonkey · 16/05/2011 17:40

PS Yes strangeways the days have seemed very long [tired emoticon]

DS is 4 and still has an afternoon nap if he is at home, although not on the 3 days he's at nursery!

mrsravelstein · 16/05/2011 17:44

ds1 still napped til he was about 3.5

ds2 stopped at 23 months

dd is 16 months and is wildly variable, sometimes she sleeps for 2 hours, more often she dozes for 40 mins, so i think she'll probably stop soon Sad

jetmonkey · 17/05/2011 08:41

It is comforting that at least it isn't unusual to stop napping early - I would worry that it is somehow damaging for her, but I guess everyone needs a different amount of sleep (I need loads more than I get Grin)
