Help! 6mo won't sleep in cot

My 6mo has now completely outgrown her moses basket however refuses to sleep in her cot. Even when she is in a really deep sleep as soon as she hits the cot mattress her eyes are wide open and she refuses to be settled (shushed/ patted) back to sleep. If we put the basket in the cot she occasionally goes in for 5-10 minutes max. She has never been great at going down and we probably haven't helped by cuddling her during a lot of her naps and she's also not great at self settling. I don't really want to leave her in her cot crying and she will lie in there during the day if I am pottering about in her room.
Any ideas Mumsnetters as she's not going to squeeze into her basket for much longer?

Thanks in advance

I put a thick towel under the sheet as the protector was somehow making dd back hot. Also I rolled up two towels and put them in a 'U' shape around dd to make it feel smaller and more snug like the moses basket (they do this in hospital) then lay the sheet over the top, a kind of nest. Start putting her in there for naps (persevere) and then nights when you are winning with the naps.

BTW keep the U shape at shoulder level and below, not around the face should she try to roll.

Many thanks, I don't know why I didn't think of the towels because I did that with her basket (before the HV felt the need to remove it Angry) I have always been torn during naps between putting her down to get her used to it and holding her to make sure she gets a proper nap - it's a good excuse for a sit down and Brew too :)

Watching this as my 9 month old rarely sleeps by herself and is still in my bed, she has slept in her cot for a grand total of 9 hours
