baby keeps wetting the bed

My 4.5 month ds is showing signs that he wants to sleep through the night at last but recently has kept waking up due to wetting the bed. I moved him up a nappy size and do the nappies up tightly (same happens to dh when he changes the nappy so I know it isn't just me). This problem keeps recurring but in the past was resolved when I moved him up a nappy size but this hasn't seemed to work this time. It is so frustrating and I am beginning to wonder if there is something wrong. Is he peeing excessively? Once he has woken and I have changed him I can only get him back to sleep with a feed.

Would it be worth changing and feeding him just before you go to bed (you didn't say what time his bedtime is, so you might be doing this already).

WSM · 30/09/2003 09:35

We used to do this with our DD when she was your DS's age, have never known her to wet the bed though her nappies are always VERY heavy in the morning though. What nappies do you use ? We use Pampers Active fit, they're more expensive than baby dry but more flexible so less likely to gape when baby changes positions and so allow leaks.

mimm · 30/09/2003 09:36

I have not done this for ages because we always had the problem that once he woke he carried on waking through the night whereas if I leave him he sleeps through (well sometimes!)

Sorry, I meant we used to do what musica is suggesting

WSM · 30/09/2003 09:37

Sorry, posts crossed mimm

bobthebaby · 30/09/2003 09:38

Sorry if I'm being obvious, but is his penis slipping to one side and wetting though close to the leg bit and thus leaking out. Our ds used to do this and now doesn't and I have no idea why - if that's any help.

WSM · 30/09/2003 09:41

Good thinking bob ! Not one that would have occured to me, being the mum of a DD

mimm · 30/09/2003 09:42

Thank you for all responding. I currently use pampers baby dry - will try active fit. The wet patch is normally up his back.

Yes we had up the back too, never did discover how that happened. Here in NZ we can get boy nappies with all the absorbent stuff in the front - so it really doesn't make sense.

WSM · 30/09/2003 09:46

They have a much more elasticated waist band and so they move with the baby.

my dd always was wet up her back in the mornings when she was in disposibles. (every morning in fact). tried every brand, moved up sizes and all the rest. unfortunatly she is a big girl, and once she got to extra large we had a problem. so i got some tots bots, have been using them for around 6 weeks, and she doesnt leak every morning now. occasionally she will have a leak at some point during the night, but not very often. and at least the poo doesnt leak out as well, which was also happening wih disposibles.

Karen99 · 30/09/2003 11:16

misdee, read this thread and found totbots come highly recommended. Went to Boots yesterday but couldn't find any - where can you get them from and what 'components' do I need to buy?

We found Pampers stick to DS if he poops early on at night and are currently on Huggies, which still leak at night - can't win

Tissy · 30/09/2003 11:36

Karen, I don't think you can buy Tots in the shops, they do have a website though.

Are you just thinking of using them for nights? If so, 2 or 3 nappies and 1 cover (wrap) should be enough.

HTH

Karen99 · 30/09/2003 11:43

Thanks Tissy. will take a look.

mimm · 30/09/2003 12:40

Thank you WSM. Have bought active fit to try.

Try putting on 2 nappies - one on top of the other. Top one needs to be a bit bigger.
Worked for us.

janh · 30/09/2003 13:38

You'd need to slit the plastic of the underneath one though mummysurfer, to let the moisture through? (Am assuming you mean disposables!)

Mummysurfer · 30/09/2003 17:17

Yes i'm talking disposable ones. But no we didn't slit the plastic the top one just caught all the leaks from the bottom one. Don't know if it would work if you slit it the top one would need to hold all the gel stuff. Try it without slitting first. A friend now does it with her ds aged 2.4 years & it's working.

misdee · 30/09/2003 18:23

i got mine from lollipop

they can arrange a home visit for u from a local rep in your area, find the best 'combination' to suit u. we use tots bots and motherease airflow wraps. i also bought some fleece liners as the paper ones seem to irritate my lil uns skin, only use the paper liner of out all day.

Thank you so much for advice. Ds didn't wet the bed last night in active fit - but woke intead for a 4 am feed! Still you can't have it all.
