Afternoon nap for 18mo - too long/too late?

9 times out of 10 I have to wake ds from his nap after nursery. He sleeps 1.15 till about 3.45 - I don't know how long he'd sleep for if I left him to his own devices.
He's still ready for his bed by 7pm. How long do your lo's sleep at this age - is nursery too much for him?
I'm not really worried about it - but is it normal? It means we can't really meet up with anyone else in the afternoons.

I read last week (I think in one of the baby mags) that it's normal for a 18 month old to have 2 to 3 hours of naps, then 12 hours sleep at night - I was amazed, but sounds like your boy is normal. in terms of getting out and about, will DS sleep in his buggy?

Hiya TracyK - DS is 19mo, just! Depending what we're doing that day, he'll sleep for between an hour and three a day - and he's always ready for bed.

He usually wakes about 7.30 and is ready for his nap again at 11. If we're at home or he's at my mum's while DH and I are at work, he'll sleep till 2ish, then have his lunch. He has tea about 6, then bath and milk before bedtime, which is between 7.45 and 8.30. We're not really routiney people, hence the variations! If we're out and about, he sleeps in the pushchair for an hour or two and eats when we do.

My 17mo ds sleeps at least 2 hours from between 12.00 and 1.00. He's always ready for bed (he goes to bed at 8pm) no matter how long he's slept in the day, but if he doesn't get enough (like yesterday he only 45mins) then he's very cranky at around tea time.

I don't think that sleeping is necessarily a sign the nursery is too much for him so long as you're otherwise happy that he's happy. I find that my ds plays hard and then sleeps hard, so a long sleep is usually a sign that he had a happy, busy morning.

Also, if I go out in the afternoon I find it better to get him in the pushchair before he falls asleep, then he'll sleep for a reasonable time. If I let him fall asleep in the cot and then lift him to put him in the pushchair he gets cranky and won't go back to sleep.

oh dear i am a bit envious i'm afraid. ds goes to a nannyshare, sleeps for 1 hour and we have immense trouble getting him to sleep at 8 at the mo, plus he wakes usually at 6.30 or earlier. I would say your ds's routine isn't broke so don't fix it. It's great that he's getting a good energetic morning.

my dd is 3 and she still sleeps 1.30 - 3.30 and goes to bed at 7 and sleeps usually until I wake her on pre school days or at weekends anything up til 9am.
Soem kids just need more sleep I think, heaven knows she is getting all the sleep my ds never wanted
I've learned to deal with it now
