How much does your 9 and 1/2 wk sleeps during the day? Is something wrong with my DD?

Hello

My BIG question is how much can my DD sleep in the day so as to not jeopardise her night sleep but enough to leave her rested. (GF book mentions 3&1/2 hours max but DD seems to need more). She can't seem to be able to stay awake for more than 1&half hours in the morning and after morning nap not matter what. It's not that I don't stimulate her and I avoided going out much when she was a newborn to help her learn to sleep without associations.

So a little bit more info about the situation. My 9 and 1/2 week old DD has always loved her sleep. She's ff from 4 weeks due to medical issues. Started sleep training her using 'spaced soothing' (found in 'Baby Secrets' book) at 3 weeks. She goes down around 7 pm.
She can self settle if not overtired, she's using dummy 80% of time, though. She used to wake up for middle of the night feed which we pushed forward and forward little by little from 2:30 up to 5am.
For the past 3 nights has slept from 11:45 (after a dream feed) until 6.45. (please don't hate me I still need to catch up on my sleep and the medication I'm on requires me to sleep more than I do now in order to cope. Thank God for my wonderful and helpful DH)

Yesterday she didn't sleep enough in the day and she couldn't keep her eyes open and went down at 6:30
Today I let her sleep longer in the morning (hour and half) she woke up played-changed nappy and fed and then down again after only an hour and 3/4 of waking up from nap!

Is this normal? Should she be sleeping this much? Her first medical was cancelled, so I'll ask the GP as well next week. In the meantime do any of you have a very sleepy baby?

Sorry if this has been covered before (pls refer me to other thread if it has) but can't afford time to search extensively.

Thanks

Sounds about right to me Grin

Sounds right to me. My 17w.o sleeps about 4 hours per day and sleeps around 7-7 at night with dream feed. Some babies just need more sleep I think.

Another vote for 'sounds right to me'. My DS would sometimes only be awake for an hour between naps at that age and I felt like I was constantly putting him to sleep. The only way that daytime sleep ever effected his nighttime sleep was if he didn't get enough naps his nighttime sleep would be worse. All babies are so different and maybe yours isn't a fan of the GF method? TBH I'd try your best to stop worrying about it (I know how hard this is) and just let your baby sleep when she's tired, she's still so young and you can tie yourself in knots trying to change what she wants to do to fit in with a book.

I have friends with babies who have 3 20 min naps a day but my DS (6mo) has about 4 hours of naps altogether and now sleeps 7pm-3.30am-7am ish most nights. I'm not sure how helpful it is to worry about what other babies are doing - it drove me mad! I do know where you are coming from with worrying about what's right/normal though. You'll find your LO will probably settle into her own pattern when she's ready and then change it a week after you think you can predict what she's going to do! I also worry less now about going out when I think DS will want to nap etc, he just makes up for it at another time... but that's my DS. He is still only usually awake for 2 hours or so between naps so 1 3/4 sounds plenty for your LO, I wouldn't fight her if she's tired cos IME an overtired baby is MUCH worse! I tried this and quickly stopped.

Thanks for your replies

I don't worry about it anymore, she seems to be content and sleeps and goes down really well around 7pm.
