Cot bumpers - good or bad?

Hi all,
ds is 21 weeks, sleeping on front and now going through the night. We have monitor with breathing movement sensor so am less worried about him sleeping on his front. However the last week or so he is moving all over the cot in his grobag and when he gets to the sides of the cot, often his arm falls down the side which wakes him up. I go up to him and take it out and turn him over and he is asleep straight away. I was just wondering whether cot bumpers would help and what people think of them before 12 months due to risk of cot death.
Any advice?

Here in Germany they are not recomended but I think in the UK the advice on them is neutral. If you are concerned about air circulation you could use them sort of pushed down so they only protect the bottom bit of the bars where his arm could slip through iyswim.

Thanks foundintranslation (love the name!) I have just been reading about them from the dept of health and Foundation for Sudden Infant Death where, as you say, advice is neutral - neither adverse nor beneficial effects so it may be worth a try.

DD always managed to wriggle her arm under hers, and still get stuck in the bars!

Harryslave · 07/11/2005 21:52

flamesparrow- how old was your dd when you started using them and would she too cry when she got stuck?

we've used one since ds was about 5/6 months

stopped him getting stuck through the bars and it's been fine!

Harryslave · 07/11/2005 22:00

starlover - that's good to hear. Would he ever end up with his face right against it?

yes he does regularly! but doesn't seem to hinder his breathing at all

starlover · 07/11/2005 22:01

if you hold one u[p to your face you can easily breathe through it.

Harryslave · 07/11/2005 22:02

thanks, that helps!

my dd3 is 5 months and just gone in cot in the last week . she now rolls over and travels round the cot too . i havent gave it a thought about whether the bumper would be a danger because as yet she is to move to top of cot i have been more worried bout her going to low down and going under the blanket even though i put her in the " feet to foot " position

Harryslave · 07/11/2005 22:11

muma3 - I would have thought in the feet to foot position she would be OK though if you are worried have you considered a grobag? DS is so fidgety in the cot that he couldn't have survived with anything else. He even turns round 180 degrees so is facing the other way!

i just have a regular mothercare one to match ds's room...

muma3 we use blankets and he has never gone under them! I often sleep under my duvet and can still breathe so I am sure ds would be fine too... but if you are worried use cellular blankets.. they have holes in!

muma3 · 07/11/2005 22:17

yes she has one but then if she turned and wiggled bk wards she could go under covers that way?? no.. 3 !!! still worry though lol
