How much sleep?

How much sleep should a 4.5 month old baby have during the day.

Ds wakes up in the morning at about 6.30am, and goes to bed at 7.30pm. Inbetween he sleeps a total of 4.5 hours. Is this too much?

the average for that age is about 15 hours in a 24 hour period but some will need more or less than that. If you and your lo are happy then it is not too much at all - enjoy it while it lasts...lol

My 4.5month ds has about 3.5hours of naps during the day (1.5 in the morning, 1.5 at lunch, .5 in the afternoon), 7-7 at night. So overall sleeps about the same as your little one just happens that a bit more of it is overnight rather than during the day.

Well the reason i ask is because he's started waking at 5am (and not through hunger). And the suggestion was put to me that he might sleep too much in the day, but if he doesn't have his sleeps then he is a nightmare

DS also often stirs at about 5am but usually settles back to sleep on his own. Sometimes he wakes more fully and needs some reassurance to go back to sleep. When he first started waking at this time it took a while to get him back to sleep but after a few days he seemed to get the message that mummy did not want to start the day that early.

Hi

My dd is 4.5 months too. She also wakes often at 5am ish and like tipex, I do the no talking, lights low and feed routine. Mostly, she will settle down and sleep for a couple more hours after this (and so will I ). She sleeps less in the daytime than your ds (2 - 3 hours maximum), so I don't think reducing your ds's daytime sleep would make a difference to waking at this time. Good luck with trying to settle him back to sleep after the 5am wake up!
