gro blackout blind for early wakings....

Anyone found these help to cut back on the early-bird summer time starts? 5.30am is not my idea of morning, but 8 month DD is possibly being woken up by the small amount of light that makes it way through our curtains!

I have one of these as the blind in DS's room lets light in all round the sides and his room is now barely dark come bedtime. I got it to help naps and bedtime now that it's getting so much brighter rather than early waking particularly.

It works for us as DS's room was very bright and this does makes it significantly darker, however I would just say that it certainly doesn't black out completely, so if your bedroom is pretty dark already I'm not sure that it would help that much.

I have one and think it is pretty crap. Lets in too much light around edges. The magic blackout blinds are much better I think

It really helped us, but was a PITA to put up every night, so we got a blackout roller blind fitted in the end. Was only about £60.

Before I bought one all I found on the internet was people saying how great they are! They are not very good at all. The sucker things don't all stick to the window; it is hard to rearrange the suckers to fit your window particularly if it is small, and they let light in all around the edge as the material is not flush to the window frame.

If you already have blackout curtains don't bother. The best blackout situation I have ever seen is where the mum nailed the material from an old blackout blind over her window and onto the wall. Of course there was no light in the room ever again and from the outside it looked like a doss house, but by God that baby slept til 7am :o

We bought blackout blinds from IKEA, and put them under the curtain - at the top of the window. Works really well.

We use the gro blackout blind underneath a normal roller blackout blind (because light still gets in through the sides of the roller). I agree that the sucker things aren't always that great, but it works well with the normal blind. We have a spare that we keep at ILs for overnight visits as well.

Both of mine have blackout lined curtains, but I have been having the same problem with light coming throught above and at the side. Both DD's were waking at 5.30am.

I went and bought 4m of blackout lining and double-sided velcro, stitched the velcro to the lining top and bottom and stuck the other side of the velcro to the window surrounds.

Much cheaper than buying blackout blinds and you can take them down in about 30 seconds each morning.

Cue lay-in until 7am yesterday and this morning - bliss Grin

Mrsfred this is exactly what I was thinking about doing Smile I currently use a Gro blackout blind but like others have said it is faffy and not that effective. I think your DIY version sounds much better. You have now spurred me on to put my plan into action. Thank you Grin

I wouldn't recommend the Gro blackout blind to anyone, except maybe as a 'going away' back up.

fifitot · 12/04/2011 21:04

I taped black paper to the window!

bilblio · 12/04/2011 21:38

We have blackout blinds. Some light still creeps in but the blind is about 6" wider on each side than the window so it's not much. The curtains and blinds are a good height above the window too.

Day four, still sleeping in till 7am... why didn't I do it before? Grin

Have to confess that I stuck black bin liners to the windows out of desperation last summer. It worked a treat but the house looked as though we were in mourning for 5 months!

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 14/04/2011 17:44

not tried the gro thing, but use this blackout material velcroed to the window under a John Lewis blackout blind. The room is proper pitch black.

cottonreels · 15/04/2011 19:10

my dh boarded up the windows Grin
we use baa baa for travel though with good effect!
