Shortening the morning nap - or am I crazy?

Apologies for the long post, I'm looking for a bit of nap advice...

I have an 11 mo little boy, and so far have been fairly go with the flow routine wise. He's fallen in to various patterns himself depending on his age and for the last few months has been taking two naps a day - the first around 9 for up to an hour and a half, and the second at some point between 2 and 3 for 45 mins, rarely longer.

In the last few weeks however the afternoon nap has been getting later and harder to settle for, and the odd time skipped completely which has made for a difficult afternoon. After spending most afternoons last week trying to get him the sleep he clearly needs (it's not like he's not tired) I thought it'd be worth trying to shorten his morning nap to an hour to help him settle for the afternoon nap early enough not to interfere with bed time. I did this yesterday and he was well ready for his afternoon nap shortly after lunch, he slept from 13:30 to 14:15, after which I took him out for a long walk in his buggy though he didn't sleep any longer. He was very cranky from tea time on and I ended up putting him to bed at 6:30 (usually 7).

Now I didn't expect it to work from day 1, but my confidence has taken a bit of a knock as he was very cranky and shouty yesterday, and awake for about an hour and a half in the early hours of this morning. He's only ever slept through twice and is generally awake 1 - 3 times in a night, though last night was a particularly bad one.

My question is, should I stick with trying to shorten the morning nap for a while and see if he settles in to a better pattern, or let him take his hour and a half in the morning and struggle with the afternoons until he figures something out for himself? Any thoughts or experience gratefully received. Thanks x

Hi, my baby has only just started reducing his night wakings to between 1 and 3 times so I'm no person to offer advice! but I just thought I'd let you know that my 10 month old follows just the same pattern of 1.5 hours first thing, and 45 mins in the afternoon. This is since he started sleeping better at night, before that he only slept for 45 mins in the morning too (and quite often through the night!), so I'm pretty happy with it. If anything I worry that he should be napping longer! (Ah- the insecurities of a modern mother with too many well meaning - or not - books on her shelf..)

Thanks Helen I'd be happy to leave him like that too, it's just he'd stopped settling for the 45 mins in the afternoon so I think I had a bit of a panic! He had an hour this morning then settled well for an hour this afternoon, but was still a bit of a cranky pants after the afternoon nap, I wish he'd have a bit longer!

Time will tell I guess, I'd love him to sleep through again one day soon - hope it happens for you soon too.

Hi,my DS is nearly 11 months.
I put him down in the morning but I wake him by 10am(goes down at 9:15 ish). Then he has a nap after lunch, about 12:30 and sleeps for a couple of hours with any luck.
I think it's worth waking your DS in the morning as obviously his after lunch nap is the one that will stay for a long while yet.

Thanks Mumcah, that's exactly where I'd like to get to with DS, I think he really needs that longer nap in the afternoon. I will persevere for a while longer. I'm taking him swimming this morning so hopefully that will help him to conk out for a long nap after lunch!

Just an update on how this is going for anyone else in the same position... All of last week I made sure DS had no more than an hour for his morning nap, I had to wake him on Monday and Friday, but the rest of the week he woke himself after 45 mins - 1 hour.

He settled easily for his afternoon nap sometime between 13:30 and 14:00 all week, so this has definitely helped my struggle with his afternoon nap. His afternoon nap was then 45 mins - 1 hour, apart from one day when he woke up very cranky and I actually managed to resettle him for another 45 mins - I never normally bother trying this during the day.

Monday - Wednesday he was up in the night at about 3:30 for anything from 30 mins to 1.5 hours, believe it or not this is actually an improvement on the norm! From Thursday night to last night he has slept through to 5:30 some days, 6 \ 6:30 others - yee ha! Long may it continue...

I was about to post exactly the same question. I'm inspired by your results so will be switching to that routine.

Thanks!
