Help please - DS will only sleep in car seat

My 15 weeks old DS slept pretty much anywhere and easily until a week ago, when he suddenly started to throw his head around when we put him in his moses basket or cot during the night (daytime naps are fine). In the past few days he only fell asleep after crying unconsolably for hours - he basically passed out from exhaustion at the end which breaks my heart!! Thinking he might have problems with reflux we have propped up one end of his basket and I hold him upright for 30 mts after each feed (3x a night) but that doesnt seem to help...the only thing that does help is when we put him in his car seat where he falls asleep immediately and stays asleep for hours. I am vey concernd however to let him sleep in the car seat as afaik there is a correlation with increased risk of SID plus its not good for his back. I have also started to co-sleep which calms him down when he sleeps on his side but again I m very scared that something might happen to him when he is not sleeping on his back, so I end up not sleeping at all in order to make sure he is ok .... ANY advice very much appreciated how we can give my DS his sleep back!!! Are there any alternatives to a car seat (unfortunately bouncer doesnt seem to do the trick...).

This might sound stupid but do you think he doesn't like the dark and quiet of his moses at night? Both my babies were becoming hyper-aware of their surroundings at that age. I am just wondering if maybe the car seat is usually positioned somewhere noisy or bright. It could also be that he likes the feeling of being all tucked up in the car seat - it kind of restrains them. In which case, it's not too late to try swaddling but you'd probably need to make it very firm so he wouldn't come undone at the slightest wiggle.
