When did you put your DC in a cot / own room

DD is nearly 3 weeks old, moses basket is too small (she is a whopper) already. She sleeps really well Blush on the sofa, this is due to her being able to sleep spread like a starfish. I popped her in the cot this afternoon and she was fine.

We can fit the cot in our room, but part of me is quite keen to keep it separate is it too early to be room her away from us or is it quite a good idea!

She sleeps (so far) quite well in roughly 3/4 blocks.

What do you think???

Thanks

Personally I would follow FSID advice which is to keep her in your room for the first six months, this is to prevent her falling into too deep a sleep, also there is a theory that your breathing reminds her to breath. 3 weeks is still very, very little. My DD is 7 months and still in with us as it means I don't have to get out of bed to feed her in the night, as she usually wakes 1/2 times for food.

My DD was 4 weeks old when we moved her into her cot in her own room. She hated the moses basket and I could only get her to sleep in a chair which reclined but which was not a long term solution. So at 4 weeks, and in spite of the official advice, she was moved into the cot in her own room and now, at 7 weeks, she is very happy there and (although it may be a coincidence/her age) since she has been there we've started to have the best sleep we've had since she was born!

It did worry me that she was in a separate room as the advice is clear, but to move the cot in with us we'd have to take the sides down so we thought we'd try her in the cot before the faff of moving it. However, we've now decided to leave it where it is because DD is really no further away from me than she would be if the cot was in our room, I can hear her breathing in her room from where I sleep, I also have a monitor which goes right by my ear so I am comfortable that I can hear her just as well as I could if she were in with me! When she wakes or cries I can get to her just as quickly as I could if she was in our room. I feed her (usually only once a night since she has been in the cot in her room!) in our room then take her back to the cot. Also, my attitude is that DD will have to be in her own room eventually so why not get used to it now (but with all the sensible arrangements we can put in place). Anyway, as both DH and I snore we now disturb DD less!

I do take the SIDS advice seriously but this is what is working for us.

Just before 6 months, because I was going back to work shifts and didn't want to wake him all the time. He was fine and didn't seem to notice the change!

I was happy to follow the FSID advice and when he grew out of his crib, (didn't use moses basket) I squeezed the cot into our room for a bit.

It was easier to get him out for feeds when he was smaller rather than going to his room.

Just after 6 months, it was a bit of a squeeze to get the cot in.

Cot and own room at 3 weeks - I am constantly flamed on Mumsnet about this but it worked for us Grin.

FoofffyShmoofffer · 24/03/2011 21:38

Recliner chair til 4 months due to dreadful GERD
Moses Basket 4 til 6 months
Cot in our room 6 til 18 months
own room 18 months on.

Personally couldn't put a tiny in a room on their own BUT you know your own child/instinct.

Moses basket in our room until 15 weeks, then cot in own room. We can still hear her if she wakes up. If she stopped breathing i doubt i would hear her whichever room she's in (certainly wouldn't wake up for an absence of breathing), so we're hoping that just doesn't happen...

mine went into a cot (in our room) when they grew out of the crib (about 12 weeks or so). They stayed in our room till around 7/8 months and then we moved the cot into their own room with no problems. I didnt want to move them before 6 months due to the FSIDs advice

Highlandgirl · 25/03/2011 10:44

We are coming to move the cot into our room..even just for a few months!

I really don't like the way people get flamed on Mumsnets..oh well...!!
