Toddler bed vs single bed

We have to move my ds (2.4yrs) to a 'big boy' bed because don't want him to feel the new baby is taking his bed when it arrives - but not sure whether to go for a toddler bed or a single bed?

Single bed makes more sense financially, but will he be lost in it? Not sure how long a toddler bed would last?

What have other people done?

TIA

definitely a single bed, toddler bed waste of money, I reckon.

Seona1973 · 20/03/2011 14:28

both mine went into full sized single beds - dd at age 2 and ds at 2 1/2. Didnt see any point in using a toddler bed

Same here, single bed for DS aged 2. He likes the fact he has a big bed, you could always put teddies (or something else) on the bottom half of the bed if he feels lost in it, but I'm sure he wont.

A friend of mine has the extendable beds from ikea, which start as a toddler bed and extend eventually into a full sized single (the mattress too) if you really wanted a toddler bed, but a single is fine imo

Thank you!

That confirms my suspicions that a toddler bed might look cute but is totally unnecessary! Seems such a lot of money to then have to buy another bed a few years later.

Right, now off to find a bed...

singles are brilliant, he won't be lonely, it will fill up with toys and new sibling in no time

TeaOneSugar · 20/03/2011 18:07

We went straight to a single bed, with a bed rail to start with, a bit like this one. We one we hard was a travel version which folded up and expanded lengthways, so easier to take on holiday and store.

Another single bed fan here too, mine went in at 13 months (with bed rail and bed surrounded by cabinets so ended up like a very big cot). I had a very small odd-size cot and my DDs were long babies who were getting wedged across it and waking up.

MrsBloomingTroll · 21/03/2011 12:46

We're about to switch from a cot-bed to single bed for the simple reason that if DD needs a lot of comforting in the night, a parent can't easily lie down next to them in a cot-bed/toddler bed to comfort them.

systemsaddict · 21/03/2011 13:01

Yes agree single bed better, we had a cotbed with ds (now aged 4) which turned into a toddler bed, but he has just moved into a single bed now and says it is much more comfortable because the mattress is that much thicker and he is sleeping much better. On reflection I think he has been uncomfortable for a good year or so Blush

catinthehat2 · 21/03/2011 13:30

I forgot also - if the child is ill and creeps in with a parent in the adult bed, you have an automatic escape bed

SarkyLady · 21/03/2011 13:39

I vote for toddler bed especially if you are at all short of space.

-duvets easy to wash after vomiting
-cheaper in short term
-can go straight to high sleeper

  • if you more than one child you can get very many years use.

Ds1 has had his since he was 2. We are getting a high sleeper for his 6th birthday.

Wriggly sleepers wouldn't last that long though.

MrsBloomingTroll · 21/03/2011 14:36

Agree with what catinthehat said. Also another guest bed option if the need arises.

I was wanting to get a big bed but was worried DS may fall out - are the rails essential?

systemsaddict · 21/03/2011 22:03

Rails are good but not essential, you can always just make the ground by the bed soft with lots of pillows. Depends on the child - my ds was still falling out and insecure aged 3, my dd was climbing into our tall double bed from 1 1/2 and never came close to falling out, she has the balance of a cat though.

MrsBloomingTroll · 22/03/2011 08:09

I've bought the BabyDan rails, which fold down out of the way when not needed.
