Sleep Training - What method do you recommend?

My ds is 10.5 months. He seems to sleep through the night for about a week and then it all goes to pot again. The last few nights he has been up every couple of hours or so and even every hour. I try not to feed him during the night but recently have given him one to try to get him back to sleep and even this doesn't always work.

Our night routine is:

Bath
Teeth
BF and story while feeding.
He generally doses off while feeding or if not will dose off just sitting in my lap after feeing.

During the day I just sit him on my knee when he needs a sleep and take him off to bed when he is asleep.

He sleeps in the same room as his big brother (10) so don't want him being disturbed in the night although bed time is a lot earlier so won't mind if there is crying at that point (well, I'd rather not have it but if that's what it takes!).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hiya.

What is his day time routine like? I.e. when does wake, sleep etc?

Mistymoo · 15/03/2011 21:27

Thanks for response. He is awake between 6 and 7 and naps maybe 3 times a day. One about 9.30 to 10 for about 30 mins Maybe another between 12 and 1 for about 30 mins to an hour and sometimes a cat nap before tea of about 30 mins.

These are all dependendent on what's happening that day and whether we are in or out.

Break the feed to sleep issue. Feed him, then read a story or something. I haven't personally tried this but my extensive research on how to get my son to sleep at night leads me to believe this is important as so many sleep commentators talk about it.

I know it's hard though.

I do try not to feed him to sleep although it probably happens about 60% of the time. He doesn't always feed to sleep but usually he is with someone as he doses off.

When he wakes is he tired and grumpy or happy and raring to go?

Another way to ensure he doesn't go to sleep on his feed to do clean his teeth after his feed.

Do you mean after his daytime naps? He is happy after the first one. If he hasn't slept long for the second one I try to give him a cuddle to sleep for a bit longer and then he is happy after the extra snooze.

Yes I meant day naps. I know it sounds back words but when they don't get enough day time naps they get over tired and it interrupts their night time sleep. So extending that 2nd sleep sounds like a good plan :)
He's having about 2.5 hours awake between waking up and 1st nap and 1st and 2nd nap? But then how long he he awake before the 3rd nap? Could he be awake too long at this point, making him too tired to go down? And then making him too tired for BT?

DS was a cat napper only having 3 half hour naps a day until 13 months! We have only just last week made the transition to 2 sleeps a day. However, at 10.5 months they are generally ready for the 2 sleeps transition, so it might be worth extending his awake times slightly to 3 hours, and try to get longer naps and just 2 of them.

Thanks for that. I will be trying these tips. I actually think that he might have another case of worms and am waiting for a stool sample to be tested. This could be another reason he is so disturbed at night just now. The doctor will have the results by Friday so will know whether to rule that out by then. I'm resigned to more sleepless nights until then :(

Give playing with the day sleeps a try anyway. And let us know how you get on.

Good luck.
