What age is safe to have a comforter?

We have just introduced a lovey/comforter little soft toy for my 6m dd. It (among other things) has really helped - instead of 30 mins of screaming before sleep she now plays with and chews it for a few mins then drops off.

But, I seem to remember reading somewhere that they should have no soft toys, or in fact anything, in their cot until 12 months. She does often fall asleep with it rammed right over her mouth and nose. So I have been waiting 5-10 mins, tiptoing back in and taking it off her. Aside from disrupting my sleep that bit more, it sometimes wakes her up, plus deprives her of it when she wakes up and could use it to self soothe back to sleep.

Dh thinks I'm nuts to risk "poking the bear", and I do suspect I'm being overly paranoid. She has started rolling on to her side and sometimes front in her sleep so a little soft duck should be the least of my worries! But I can't get the niggling doubts out of my head... please set me right one way or the other! Thanks...

Not sure by DS 7 months also has a bear comforter and likes to fall asleep with it over his face! I worry a little but figure he can put it there so take it off just as easily....

I would be very reluctant to get rid of it, he self settles now thanks to that lovely bear!

DD2 has something like that since 4 months old
She also has a soft lamb with a hole in the middle (looks like a soft toy handle with feet and a lamb face) from birth. It is safe if age appropriate and doesn't fill the whole cot.
I would say a small duck at 6 months is fine

Just to reassure you, if she can hold and move her head there is no problem. As she can already roll, even less.

That makes me feel better. Thanks both for the reassurance! dd's duck is similar to your bunny one, schrodinger.
