Always asleep/sleepy

DS2 was born at 34+4 but is now 12 weeks old. I'm not sure whether or not to be concerned - he still acts like a newborn. So he'll wake for his feeds every 2 or 3 hours but will then go back to sleep (or if DS1 is around he can't sleep but will be very grumpy as he's tired). On one hand I LOVE it as DS1 was a terrible sleeper from day 1 but I'm now starting to worry. For instance he's not yet smiling which I'm not concerned about as he's only 6 weeks corrected but I've read that they learn to smile from mimicing you but he's literally never awake long enough to see this.
Anyone else had such a sleepyhead?

My DS was known as 'Rip Van Surname' for many months. Routine was wake up, feed, change, look around for 30 - 40 mins, sleep for 2 hours... repeat. As a toddler he napped for 2 hours morning and afternoon. When he started school I lost count of the times I'd pick him up at the end of the day to find him fast asleep on the storytime carpet. "Does he get enough sleep at home?" they'd ask, all concerned. Just 11 hours at night.... :) Even now, age 10, the idea of a late night being a treat fills him with horror because 'I love my bed'. He's an earlybird 6.30am kind of guy instead. Can't wait to see what kind of teen he is... back to permanently asleep I'm guessing.

Oh yes... good at maths, articulate, lively imagination, energetic but rubbish at football. :)

hi Nina

my DS is 8 weeks. I was recently reading a post somewhere advocating making them have a nap when they've been awake 2 hours and realised that he has never been awake 2 hours! He just feeds, plays for an hour, sleeps an hour, on cycle (sadly doesn't go longer than 3 hours at night and only naps 3am onwards but I still know I'm blessed). This might be because I wear him in the sling pretty much all day or might be his nature. He self settles to sleep in his cot and will snooze anywhere, on anyone.

However he is smiling and when he's awake he's VERY awake, all playing and even babbling and grabbing at things, so I don't worry about his development, plus he's a big boy and gaining lots of weight. Is yours alert when he's awake?

bigkids...I'd say he so-so regarding alertness. He is developing in some ways, such as he's gaining lots of strength in his neck for holding his head up. He's also a big boy and gaining weight well esp considering he's a premmie.
But given the chance he'll literally sleep all day. Today for example, I got him up at 8, quick bf, sleep, woke just after 10 for quick bf, sleep, woke at 12 for bf etc.. The only awake time he had was 2-3. He's upstairs now asleep.
I don't know if I should be worried??

My aunt tells me that her second son was like this. He would literally sleep 23 hours out of 24. Even as an older baby and toddler he would sleep A LOT. He is 16 now and an exceptionally lazy (although v bright) teenager.

I don't know - not a medic I'm afraid. Could you ask your GP? Did you mention it at the 8 week check?
