How much should my 14 week old babe be sleeping at night?

Baby naps quite well and goes down at about 7.00pm having bottle fed (formula) at about 6.30pm. She wakes at about 10.30pm for a feed and then about 2.30am. Then finally wakes around 6.00am.

She was sleeping in a moses basked until recently with us next to her and has done stretches of 5.5 hours at night but can't seem to go longer than 4 hours now she is in her own room and in a proper cot. We moved her into her own room about two weeks ago now. She is fine in there and not upset but sleep periods don't last as long as they used to.

The books i have read say that she has the ability at her age to sleep for longer - maybe as long as 8 or 9 hours in one go. How do we do this? She keeps waking automatically every 4 hours and I fear we have trained her to do so.
Sometimes i feel she will never sleep through Sad

Your expectations seem a little unrealistic! Please don't try to conform to a book - just go with the flow and enjoy your little one. Sleep is a precious thing, but you will only stress yourself out by worrying about what she should or shouldn't be doing at a particular time. If she's waking up for a feed and then going back to sleep, that's fine, as long as you're getting some sleep between.

DH threw my baby books in the bin when DD1 was a baby 'cos I was fretting so much - best thing he ever did (almost...)

Just enjoy and stop worrying! (Plenty of time for that later on...!)

Still a bit young for 8/ 9 hour stretches i think - particularly if she's breastfed? Sounds normal (and pretty good actually) to me. My DS is 15 weeks and is still really hit and miss. He regularly does 5 or 6 hours but has yet to do 8 or 9 hours. And i can never predict what time he'll wake - sometimes he wants an 11pm feed, sometimes he goes through from 7pm till 1am or midnight till 6.30am. Have tried forcing a dream feed on him but it seems to make him more unsettled so figure he'll get there on his own soon enough. I'm getting 3 or 4 hour stretches of sleep (and so are you) - some MNers would kill for this so don't despair and have patience! Wink

Sorry, just seen she's formula fed. Same applies though i reckon - she's doing well enough by the sound of it.

Sounds pretty good to me.

DS3 is 16ish weeks and sleeping about the same as your DD. He had started to go 5+ hours but then had a cold and went to 2 hours and is now back to 4 hours.

DS3 is the best sleeper I have had out of 4DC (I have a whole lot of sleep nightmare stories I could bore you with) so I think you should try to relax a bit, realise that your baby will do what she wants to regarding sleep at this age and that it doesn't reflect on your parenting abilities. Oh, and ditch the books!
