What's your DCs mood when waking from night sleep/napping?

I'm curious as to what other peoples childrens moods are like when waking? My DS is 5months and for the first few wks slept pretty normally for a newborn(he also had jaundice so probably slept more) then he started with colic for weeks until he was about 12/13wks. He would often not sleep at all in the day then have broken sleep at night. We started putting him to sleep on his front at about 8wks -shock horror! He slept much better, several hours in one go! Gradually he's dropped night feeds (I mainly bf) and now he seems to be sleeping for England!
Thing is mainly when he wakes, he cries - not screams but more kind of whines/sing song crying. He never seems to want to wake up though if you go in to get him up after a few minutes he's ok and smiles but often he's not and it's like we've disturbed his sleep and he doesn't want to be awake!
Anyone else have one like this? What's the general mood of DCs when they wake for the day?
I'm wondering if we ought to try and get him to sleep
on his back now so he can see better when he wakes up. Any advice or help?

My DC (15 weeks) is fine when waking from night sleep, but usually wakes up crying from naps. I'm fairly certain he's not sleeping long enough for naps as he tends to wake after 45 minutes. If i catch him right (just as he's stirring in light sleep) and shush him back to sleep for another 45 minutes he wakes up in a much better mood. He loves his sleep, also had jaundice as a newborn, but is at that age when being awake is too interesting/ too much fun so he gets overtired by mid afternoon if i'm out and about. He's a whinger, not a screamer, and his tired whinging at the moment is driving me to distraction! He just won't give in and i'm putting in massive effort right now to get him to sleep for longer. He's such a pleasant, happy little chap mostly but this week has been tough. Sad

DS was like this when he was little. Since about 18 months though he wakes up full of beans and really happy.

I don't think he's getting too little sleep! Maybe too much!?
Today he's had 2naps of roughly 2hrs and is asleep now again & bedtime is at 7! If he doesn't wake I'll get him up about 5.30 which is meant to be too late for him to be tired again for bath and bed but he seems only to be able to manage 1 1/2hrs awake unless there's lots going on but then he'll get overtired! So if he's not grumpy due to lack of sleep what is it!? Should I just be grateful he sleeps a lot? It's just I feel bad I'm not entertaining him more etc. I don't want to force him to stay awake and be grumpy though. Some days he gets less sleep depending on what we do and if we're out &about, do babies catch up on sleep like adults if theyve had less the day before? I'm probably just a paranoid new mum! Waiting til 18months for him to wake up happy seems a long time!

I think it could be overtiredness / lack of sleep - almost all babies that age need 3 naps a day. Most drop to 2 naps around 6-9 months. 1.5 hours awake before needing another nap sounds normal to me.

IME some babies (e.g. my DS) struggle to catch up on sleep like adults if they've had less the day before - they might get a little bit more, but not necessarily enough to make up for the sleep deprivation. Missing a nap is harder to recover from than a too-short nap.

And to answer the original question, my DS (now 14 m.o.) is always cheerful when he wakes if he's had enough sleep. If he's woken before he wants to, or is generally tired, he's much more likely to be grumpy.
