Not napping at nursery

DD is settling into nursery this week as I return to work next week. So far, they are yet to be able to get her to nap (she's not doinf full days yet, just an increased length of time each day) and today she was exhausted when I picked her up. She has since only had a short nap though (i suspect overtiredness is at play here) and so I will have to put her to bed extra early tonight.

There seems to be so much going on, she can't relax enough. When I got there the worker was trying to rock her (something I don't do as I find DD either goes of better in the pram (which they can't do) or left in her room she will settle down on her own (mainly at bedtime though, not naptime). Our intervention often prolongs her droping off. I don't know what to suggest to them...
She does have a gro-bag at home, so I might take that in tomorrow as it might work as a sleep cue.

Please tell me your experiences. What do you suggest?

It will happen, wont it? Confused

How old is your DD?

My DD started at nursery at 6 months and was fine with it. Now 2.7 and we are dropping the naps.

I do know that some friends had DCs who had problems learning to nap at nursery, but they got there in the end.

DD will soon learn how to sleep at nursery. Many a time I had children who didn't nap at home, or who found it hard to nap when they first started and ended up being the ones we'd have to wake up! :D

she is 1yo in 2 weeks. She has gone though phases of being a crap napper and a good napper Confused

Since she learnt to stand, I haven't successfully got her to nap in the cot (she used to nap for 2hrs in there, and self-settle!) i use the pram, either rocking her indoors, or going out for a walk. I suppose this hasn't helped as now she needs to learn to go back in a cot...

She is a light sleeper, so is disturbed easily by the other babies crying!

I just need to know she will get there in the end.

She will get there - she will be fine, at the moment;

there is too much going on for her
she isn't used to sleeping at nursery

thanks grabaspoon - you give good advice.

How long, in your experience, does it take for things to settle down a bit and for LOs to 'get it'?

Depends on the child and depends on whether they're part / full time but probably a couple of days or so :) But don't worry if it takes longer - the staff will be just as keen to get her to sleep as you want her to nap :)

Just wanted to add that my little one has never been a great sleeper in the day (although it's getting better!) and has also recently been setlling into nursery. I was dreading the time when she was there long enough to need a sleep. The first day she slept for 10mins! the next it was 15mins!...some progress!?! Now it h=is her average of 40-45mins. She has 2 naps a day. Not brilliant but better than nothing and I think she catches up when at home.

BUT...they do let her sleep in a pushchair. She sleeps in the cot at home but only after I rock her to sleep. They have several pushchairs and are happy for the little ones to sleep in them if that's how they can sleep. Will your nursery condier this?

My DD has been at nursery since June and hates to nap! She literally takes what she needs to keep going and some evenings are terrible with her. She is fine at home the other days though. The grobag is a great idea but I think it will just take a bit of settling in time.

curlyLJ · 03/03/2011 09:20

I don't think rocking her off in a pram is an option Lazaroo but I will ask again today.

She seemed to have quite an unsettled night (thankfully she re-settled herself each time) but I guess it was because she was just sooo exhausted and overtired even tho I put her to bed a bit earlier.

I am going to take her grobag today to see if that helps...

I just hope they can crack this or I am going to be worried all the time I am at work Sad
