Sleep training give me some ideas/advice

DS is now 17 weeks old and I need to sort out his sleeping. I am dangerously tired (falling asleep at the wheel tired) and have a 3yo to care for as well.

I know this is a classic time for changes in sleep patterns but I need a method to try to combat it. I have had no more than 3 hours sleep a night for the last 4 weeks and I can't take anymore.

Is PU/PD a method that would be suitable for this age group and if so how did you do it?

Any other suggestions suitable for this age?

Sorry. I do think your DS is too young for sleep training. And, to be honest, you sound like you are too tired to be able to see it through anyway.

Is there anyway you can get a break? My DH always did the midnight feed, so I would go to bed at 9pm and (mostly) not be woken up again until 3am. It's meant I could get a good 5-6 hours which just about kept me going. Is that kind of thing an option for you?

Rather than sleep training, have you thought about a routine instead. I know it's not popular on mn but does work for many people and may get you more sleep. Apologies if you're already doing this.

2cats not sure about too tired to see it through when you know there is a better outcome to be had. Unfortunately DH can't give a feed as DS is bf and will not take a bottle.

ilovemountains a stronger routine probably would help we do have a bedtime routine which means he does go down quite well to start with but not much of a routine the rest of the time I've let it all slide too busy with toddler! (I know they're not popular but I think some children thrive on routine)

Thanks for your views. Have you used white noise at all?

hi there - i used pupd successfully on a younger baby -
see here

she is now 4 mo and still wakes 2-3 times most nights, but no longer wakes hourly, nor needs a nipple in her mouth to sleep.

thanks for that charlottebrontesaurus will read avidly. I think waking 2-3 times a night is fine fully and I expect it he's only 4 months but waking every 30mins to an hour is no good for me or him.

charlottebrontesaurus what a great thread I should have looked a bit harder before starting this one. That's exactly what I needed to read, you sound just like me at the beginning of the thread. I need a plan, I'm off to make one.

mum2 - sorry you're having such a rough time
let us know what you decide to do and how it goes

mum2oneloudbaby · 07/03/2011 10:29

well I'm getting him back on EASY we were using this to start but had a rough start to the year with one thing and another and it just slipped. It's going ok. Then onto the PUPD starting today. So we'll see.

Hope you are getting a better nights sleep.
