Please, please help. My poor DD has now been awake for 9 hours. Won't sleep in carrier, don't own sling, no access to car right now, won't comfort suck to sleep, won't feed to sleep, won't be rocked, won't just be left...

DD is obviously very, very tired but won't drop off. I can get her to doze but that's it. It's now midnight here and I'm exhausted.

With comfort sucking and feeding we get her the closest to sleep bur when she finally dozes pulling my nipple from her mouth wakes her. Can't co sleep for various reasons so cant just leave her there.

Please help me!

Have you tried a dummy? I know some people don't like using them but we did with DS as we were desperate and we managed to wean it off him a few weeks later.

oh - I really feel for you btw - I can remember how hard it is. Hope you manage to get some rest and hopefully someone else will come along with some more helpful advice.

oh lordy, you poor thing.

will she suck on a finger? i know it's far from ideal, but more might be more comfy to dangle a finger into the crib and snooze than to have her on the breast?

or otherwise how about stop trying to soothe her to sleep and take her to a different room and do something different for 10 minutes. sometimes dd2 (16weeks) gets into a sort of crying groove where she doesn't seem to remember how to stop, unless we go and do something completely different for a bit.

are you swaddling? both of mine loved this. white noise?

newborn sleep is HORRIBLE.

sarahfreck · 21/02/2011 16:32

Try turning on your vacuum cleaner as a form of white noise! Our neighbours used to turn it on underneath the cots of their two! Maybe not have it quite as close as that - but I guess it can't hurt to try.

my son is now 15 weeks and has been awake for house during the day from the time he was 10 days old. at night the only way to get him to sleep is to feed all evening and then if he will not feed to sleep or self settle get him to suck my finger to sleep once he's in his cot, its a nightmare, sorry

Sorry for the delay in replying. Thank you all for your replies and thoughts. The past few days have been just as rubbish. I've written to my family dr who used to be a sleep specialist for advice so we'll see what she says. So far today she's had 13 hrs sleep but were now in the witching hour when usually that's it until midnight sleep wise.

We are swaddling, using white noise, trying to get her to sleep on boob on finger on dummy... No luck. Eventually she drops off, usually on boob.

If the dr has any great tips I'll report back.

Oh god, mine was like this when she was tiny. I remember it was horrific. And the worst part was that no one believed me - I went to an NCT reunion thing at 8pm when she was about 6weeks, and everyone was very Hmm when I said she hadn't slept all day!

She did grow out of it, quite quickly really. Bf lying down was a godsend - I started feeding her on the bed at the same times each day, roughly, and at first she would doze, but after a few weeks was napping properly with me lying next to her. And gradually I managed to escape once she was asleep, and then we moved her to cot, then her own room.

She sleeps and naps like a dream now. 7 til 7 at night and two naps, no crying at all.

We did do sleep training (a very diluted version of cc where we left her for 2 mins at a time) but not until 10 mo. It worked in 2 nights, but I don't think it would have worked as well earlier, and I wouldn't have felt right doing it.

So there is hope for you!

She is 12MO btw! But was napping and sleeping reasonably well by 5mo.
