Wriggly 16 month old - covers dilemma. Can anyone PLEASE help?

We appear to have a VERY wriggly / restless sleeper who simply cannot stay under covers. Been-there-done-it with the gro-bag too but he simply gets very cross when he wakens because he cannot stand up if he's been sleeping in a gro-bag.

What also doesn't help is that his most comfortable position is not lying lengthways in the cot like he's supposed to. Oh no, our little one like to lie at the very top of the cot, widthways!!!! Grrrr! He wakens several times a night and I think it may be because he not warm/cosy enough to stay asleep. We currently put him to bed with vest, babygrow then fleecy babygrow on top so that if he's out the covers all night at least he won't be too cold. I've tried tucking covers in, not tucking them in...blah,blah,blah. You get the picture...

I will be very appreciative to anyone who can offer me some words of wisdom!

Thank you in advance.

My DD was like this, we accepted the fact that she was happy without the covers. She has a thin sheet and we dress her in about five layers. She is happy as parry, we know she is warm and if by miracle she manages to keep the cover on as it's a sheet we know she won't over heat.

We tried everything and this is the only solution we found so I will be watching this threadGrin for some ideas.

You can get those really warm sleepsuits with legs and feet for older children, disney seem to do them. Just do a google search on fleece sleepsuit.

I used to swear by sleeping bags but my 16mo won't tolerate them now. She's a wriggly one like yours and all I can do is make sure she has plenty of layers on. Thankfully our house isn't draughty and cold and it's not too cold at night at the moment anyway.

Thank you for your replies. Seems like layers is the way forward then...

Anyone else got any miracle solutions?

Just out of interest, those of you who have 'wrigglers' Do you tuck the covers in so at least the covers don't move/ride up the cot, etc or do you keep covers loose so if baby moves at least some of the covers (i.e. a tiny corner!!!)might move with him and keep him partially warm?

Keep 'em comin...

Have you tried putting a light cover over their normal cover widthways and tucking it under the mattress? I also put a fleecy blanket tucked in up my ds head for extra snuggle - saying that if he wants to get out he will and he wakes really early lol! Still worth a try!

Grobag sell a sheet that has 2 layers like a sleeping bag. Have no idea if it works but look it up! Ds2 was similar to yours. I just went with warm fleece suit so he didn't get too cold. Play games involving hiding under covers to practice pulling them back on. He'll soon learn to cover himself back up if cold.

I tuck a stretchy nanny knitted cellular blanket in over the duvet. This is fairly effective.

I've just cut the end off a grobag for my toddler, because she tends to kick the duvet off but also for long-winded reasons has access to stairs from her bedroom and was paranoid she would fall down them.

it is brilliant. it still stays on as a layer, but she can stand and walk around fine! i add socks on particularly cold nights.

maldivemoment · 17/02/2011 22:34

omaoma - oh my goodness, you are a GENIUS!!!!!!! Why, oh why, have I never even considered this?????? If it were not for the fact that i am actually in bed, I would be off chopping up a gro-bag.

I presently do tuck in a fleecy blanket under his mattress but he likes to sleep on front with bottom in air so it needs to be loose enough for him to turn. A result of which means he can never stay under the covers!

WIll try the 'new' gro-bag tomorrow night and see how that goes. This gives a whole new meaning to the term 'cut-offs!!!!'

It's also nice to know I'm not alone.

Thank you all

... i have to confess it was my mum's idea. she came up with it instantly after i told her the problem. I, like you Maldive, had never considered it! FYI you have to cut off a surprising amount of bag to get it to leg length

perhaps unlike me you will be unslummy clever enough to actually sew up the hem afterwards...

maldivemoment · 17/02/2011 23:09

'sew up the hem????' I do not understand such language! Blush

I used to put the duvet on the bed sideways. It tucks in much better that way, as there is more length.
