Daytime naps - Newborn HELP!

Hi there
I am the proud mum of 2 girls (3.5 years and 6 weeks old) but I am so stressed about my 6 week old. You would think I would know what I am doing but I am doubting EVERYTHING!

She will not sleep during the day unless in a car seat or pushchair. Everytime I try her in a bouncy chair or moses basket she just screams. I know she is tired (yawning), I swaddle her, play nice music or have the chair on vibrate. She will sleep on me but always wakes the minute I transfer her. I am going insane as I cannot do anything which would be OK with 1 baby but I have a toddler who needs me. So I end up going out on endless walks.

I KNOW this is fairly normal but I have this over-riding fear that it will never get better. So I have 2 questions...

  1. Has anyone else experienced this and when did it start to get better?
  2. How did you resolve it?

I just need some hope that I will be able to get her into a moses basket at least once a day for a nap fairly soon.

have you tried buying a sling?

my newborn loves his - lots of skin to skin contact, but I can still do lots with him in it.

it's a compromise, but might save your sanity a little.

I think at 6 weeks this is pretty common. We used the sling loads for the first 6 weeks. I started putting DS2 in his cot around the same time each morning from around 10 weeks. I think it's good to do that even if she doesn't sleep at all. He's now 16 weeks and will go to sleep in his cot, although I usually have to leave him grizzle for a while. It will get better. I assume she goes to sleep at night OK? Is there anything about bedtime that you think really works and you could replicate at night time? (for me "wave music" really worked).

My DS2 doesn't sleep half as much as I would like him to in the day (he keeps falling asleep before 6.30 because he's knackered and not having a full feed = more night wakings!!), but he is at least sleeping for 30mins-1 hour twice a day.

I mean replicate in the day time!

Thanks

I have tried a baby carrier which she seems to hate. I am trying her in the moses basket for her first morning nap in the hope that one day it will click!

She does settle at night but I have to put her down asleep after keeping her upright for 20 mins (she has reflux). I swaddle her and put on her slumber bear. The only difference is the light...maybe she hates the light during the day?? At night she generally feeds at 7.30-8pm, sleeps till 11.30-12:00, feeds then sleeps until 4.30-5am, feeds and then sleeps until 7-7.30am (in this last sleep section she sleeps much lighter...maybe due to light bedroom??).

Camperfan - do you think 6 weeks to too early to...

  1. Panic
  2. Keep trying the nap in moses basket

????????????

Yes I think it is too early to panic! No harm in trying to get her to nap in Moses basket, I just wouldn't panic when she doesn't seem keen.

CamperFan · 19/02/2011 07:39

I would make it darker for naps. But in the morning she is probably reaching the end of her sleep anyway. Have you got black out curtains etc?

Is she on anything for the reflux?

It can cause probs with sleep - both my DCs have/ had it and it really mucked up their sleep. Is the pushchair angled/ inclined? Refluxy little ones often don't sleep well on flat surfaces and/ or on their backs.
