Help - 15 month old wont sleep

All

We are at our wits end - our little boy 15 month just doesnt sleep at night. he wakes up 2 or 3 times - sometimes he wants a full bottle and sometimes he doesnt want milk. When he wakes up he is immediately hysterical and on being picked up doesnt always calms down immediately - often not wanting to be touched/held. However if we leave him in the cot hs bangs himself on the sides of the cot. We have tried everything from diluting milk to controlled crying ( he will stand up in his cot and keep going for hours.. one night was until 5am with only two 30 minute patches of actually going to sleep). He seems to be getting worse and at night now wont let his father comfort him or give him milk. We have a second baby due in two months and are at our wits end. He has a regular bedtime routine.. and on first going down will have his milk .. go in the cot awake and fall asleep - it is subsequent wakings where the issues normally start ( often first time he wakes is only 2 hours after bedtime). Should we persist with controlled crying or is this making things worse.. any other ideas? Im also concerned that when we try the controlled crying he stands up in cot and bangs his head on it which cannot be good.
Thanks

Hi, sorry to hear you're little one is keeping you up at nights. We've an 8 month old DD who used to be a difficult sleeper. We tried the controlled crying, but it just made her worse....she cried, I cried, and her general happiness during the day was affected. We gave up on cc after 5 days.

Instead, we've linked a piece of classical music with her normal bed routine and have it on repeat on the ipod all night....so if she wakes, she hears the 'sleepy music'. I think this helps her feel comfortable on her own in the cot and she generally puts herself back to sleep during the night.. might be worth a try? Hope his sleeping gets better for you soon.

Bumping for you. Our 11 month old ds is waking about ten times a night. I co sleep so I don't have to get up, but am totally shattered.

Can you calmly go in, pick up, check for wind, put him down and say "night night sleep time", lay down and leave your hand on him. He might be having a nightmare? does he watch tv in the evenings?
Other option is teeth - try calpol at the first waking. Takes about 20 mins to kick in.

Also how late does he go to bed? He could beovertired and unsettled - try bed half an hour earlier.
