HAS ANYONE FOUND AN UNUSUAL METHOD TO GET THEIR BABY TO SLEEP?

Hi there,

Has anyone found that special something that sends their baby straight to sleep? My sister has found that her son goes to sleep really quickly when she puts his head by the extractor fan, and both her children fall straight to sleep if they're driven about in the car for 15 minutes.

I'm wondering if any other mothers have found their own weird and wonderful tricks that seem to send their baby off to sleep almost without fail. Maybe you know another mother who's found something really unusual that works a treat?

If you have a couple of minutes to spare, please share here

Libby

Used to sit ds in his bouncy chair in front of the washing machine - the spin cycle did the trick every time!

When DD was smaller I used to have to put the hoover on to get her to nap.

It's white noise - supposed to remind babies of the sound of blood rushing through the mother's body before they were born.

I seem to remember Wayne Rooney mentioning in an interview a while back that he still needs to sleep with a hairdryer/hoover/fan on.

My DS goes to sleep on seconds if bundled up in a blanket and taken outside to the garden - leaves me with a sleeping baby in a blanket who won't go into his crib but asleep all the same :)

How old is yours now? does the spin cycle still work? who else uses this trick?

Ssshhing really loudly does the trick (the white noise thing again - it's louder in there than you'd think!)

holding a fractious over-stimulated baby in front of a plain light wall can help them calm and go to sleep

DS used to be calmed right down by David Attenbrough's voice. We used to put the DVD of Life in the Trees on for him. He didn't watch it, he just listened.

Hairdryer. Discovered at hairdressers when DS1 uncharacteristically fell asleep by himself in his pushchair...

He still likes white noise at bedtime and is 11 now...

To get DS to nap in the day I have to pin his arms down as otherwise he throws them around and it keeps him awake. I tuck one arm under my arm and hold the other in my hand, it's quite a skill! Mind you this seems to have failed in the last few days so maybe he's growing out of needing to be held like that.

Driven around in a landrover and then left outside all night in a pram.

OK it was 1964 but my mother says it worked really well. Hmm

Youngest likes the end of his nose rubbed.

no night-time probs, but for daytime - to cover up doorbells, thudding older children & shrieks - used to play a very long James Galway tape (would be a CD now - even better Smile)

David Attenbrough's a great one!! He should read children's stories, I can imagine he'd be very soothing.

John Denver on the MP3 player. Some would call it child cruelty, but it was the breakthrough that got our DS to settle well at night from early on. He doesn't need it any more, but music still really chills him out.

Mouseybrown · 15/02/2011 17:15

Up until DS was about 4 months DH would lie him on his thighs whilst he was sat watching TV and pull his (DS's) feet in a rhythmic sort of way. I thought it looked like cruelty to babies when I first saw it but DS loved it and always fell asleep. DH still does it now (DS is 7months) and although it doesn't send him to sleep any more it still calms him down wonderfully!

Hairdryer. Amazing, its like flicking a switch. On the baby, not just the hairdryer. She is out in about 2 minutes.Best advice my mother ever gave me.
I also have a recording of a 'gurgling stream' that works if its really loud.

I've reported this thread as the OP has contact me (and probably most of you) asking if I want to appear in a video project for Avent.

Apparently she works for an agency called TVF Communications.

Ha! Did think the OP read like it had been written by a journalist!

When DD was a baby, white noise sent her off to sleep in an instant, as did an electric swinging chair. Now is a toddler and seelf-settles off to sleep without any aids (in her cot).
