uncontrollable crying

hi all - wonder if any of you have any ideas. DS is nearly 5 months old and is normally a pretty good sleeper. had a relapse for about a fortnight but then discovered pick up/put down and has since been much easier to settle - when i put him down and if he wakes in the night.

last night though he woke at 1:30 and was screaming and screaming - never heard anything like it before. the only way i could settle him was to give him a feed. he then settled ok. woke again at 4:50 and was in a similar state. i knew he couldn't be hungry (he normally goes 11 or 12 hours without a feed in the night) but after trying everything else to soothe him i gave up and put him on the boob, which finally got him to calm down.

have just put him down again after another screaming session. he was absolutely knackered - fell asleep before i even zipped up his grobag (very unusual!) - but my instinct is that it was more than just tiredness - there was a real desperation to his cry.

any ideas? no sign of teeth yet and he doesn't have a temperature.

I've had this with DS (now 8mths) on quite a few occasions
He is not much of a crier but has had a few evening of yelling and refusing the boob
I put it down to the teeth

If no temperature I wouldn't worry too much

If it happens again I'd call the doc out rather than hang around for hours in A&E

Hi there. Obviously you know the sound of different cries and your ds's sleeping pattern, but is there any chance that he is hungry - maybe a growth spurt or something?

If he calms down straight away on the boob, it seems likely to be either hunger or being frightened - maybe nightmares?
