avoid overtiredness - how long could your 3-4mth baby stay awake?

after getting lots of support on epic threads passim, we think dd2 has been chronically overtired.

having watched her like a hawk, she shows really very few tired signs - no yawning, rubbing eyes, 1000 yard stare that others mention. so we're looking to the clock as well as watching her. i reckon she can only stay awake for about an hour - even at 14+ weeks. i'm just interested to find out what others' experiences are, as people keep mentioning 2 hours?????!

DS is 11 weeks and gets grumpy if he's awake longer than 2 or three hours. This morning he has been awake three hours so I've put him in his bouncy chair to get him to sleep or he just gets more and more grumpy!

i think DS could only do about 1.5 hours at that stage - 2 at a push!

happygilmore · 05/02/2011 13:52

mine at that age would be 1.5hrs max, more like 45mins in the morning

thanks - interesting to hear of plenty of othr who can't manage 2 hours

My dd2 at 18wks, can only manage 1.5 hours too! maybe 2-3 hrs before bed if i'm too busy with dd1 to put her down. x

DS can now manage 2hrs at a push at 19 weeks, but 1hr 45 is the optimum. It was 1hr 15/ 1hr 30 for ages, which was absolutely knackering for us. At one point it felt like we were constantly trying to put him down for naps!

Someone on here gave me the tip of looking out for reduced eye contact/looking away/going a bit quiet. This happens about 10mins before the yawns start (which I found was too late - he was already overtired by then).

Sometimes I just go by the clock and get him down before he shows any signs at all, especially if he hasn't slept well for his previous nap - which is almost always, the little sleep-fighting rascal ...

14 weeks here and anything from 45mins to 2 hours between naps. He also has 13 hours at night (with 2 or 3 wakes for feeds before anyone gets Envy). So I also feel like I always either trying to get him to sleep or he IS asleep.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 06/02/2011 16:55

that's just it titty
dd2 usually only naps for 45mins, and can only stay awake and happy for 1hr +/- 15mins.
i have basically spent the whole day saying "i'll just take dd2 for a sleep...."
oh, for a child that would drop off in a bouncy chair.

It makes me feel like a terrible mother (like everything does), I think people look at me constantly trying to get him to sleep thinking I don't want to spend any time with him or 'do' anything.
