to expect a 12 wk old to sleep in his cot at night ?

DS1 absolutely refuses to do his 7 - 11 stretch in his cot, will happily go in it after that.

Have tried on numerous occasions, result being excessive screaming for prolonged periods (up to an hour), which I am just not prepared to put his through this young.

I am sure DD1 did it at this age, but I might be imagining it.

I am getting a hunchback from the sling {hmm}

Each child is different. DD did not sleep till 10 months for more than two consecutive hours - why the hell we decided to compound this by having DS is beyond me - but DS slept from day one - until he got to 1 and now he's a sod at bedtimes.

Children are weird. If you accept this your life will be no less random but at least you won't stress about it. Grin

podster I don't know the answer, but our DS of 15 weeks is the same, execpt we don't always get the 7-11 'stretch' even if we allow him to sleep on us.... :(. Not unless we are continually pacing around the house. In the dark.

Some sort of switch seems to go at around 11 pm and then he will sleep in his cot with wakes for feeding until around 7.

No help to you whatsoever but just thought I would let you know you're not alone!

I think mine used to nap on my lap on my widgey pillow till I went to bed at that age.

The hour at which he'd happily go in his cot/crib just gradually got earlier. We noticed he got really sleepy round about the same time each night.

It was harder to tell when he was tiny - now he lies down on the floor with his blankie when he's sleepy! (16mo now)

Thank-you, makes me feel better Smile. I thought seeing as DD1 did everything she was meant to sleepwise it must be me - I clearly need to go with the flow and be grateful with the fact he is at least sleeping (albeit not where I want him too !).

Podster, IMHO, definitely nothing much to do with what we as parents do. I am on my second DC, first was an appaling sleeper, really bad. Second DS is also fairly appaling, but not quite as appaling as DD was. I haven't done anything particularly differently with him: I think it's just they way he is.
