How much sleep does your 1 year old get?

DD is 1yo. I'm concerned that she isn't getting enough sleep.

She goes down at 7pm and sleeps until 5.30am (normally)-6.30am (on a very good day) , usually without waking. She has 90 minutes maximum naps in the day, in one chunk if we're lucky, more often two.

So usually she gets no more than 12 hours sleep in 24.

I keep hearing/reading about all these babies sleeping for 12 hours a night plus two hours nap. It makes me worry that my little one isn't sleeping enough. She seems well and happy, though does seem to have little shadows under her eyes.

Whatever we do we can't seem to get her to nap for longer. And we did try to combat the early rising, but after waking the neighbours up really early one morning, don't feel we can do that any longer.

I would be interested (and hopefully reassured!) to hear how much sleep other one-year-olds are getting.

DS is 13 months. He generally goes down at 7 ish and wakes up around 7 (sometimes a bit earlier, sometimes a bit later). He rarely sleeps through though and is usually awake for half an hour or so at around 5 am.

He usually has 2 x 45 minute naps in the day. So I suppose a similar amount to your dd ?

DD is 15 months - goes down about 7, usually up at 5.30 and then has a couple of hours during the day so about 12ish hours. As long as she seems well and happy I wouldn't stress about it

Thanks for the replies. I feel a lot of pressure to "make" her sleep more. Older relatives have a lot to say about what she should be doing, or what their babies did etc etc.

Don't they always Smile

Its not fair - they had gripe water with alcohol in it in "the old days' so it was probably much easier to "make" a baby sleep.

If she's pretty much happy, then try not to worry

belgian can you put your DD's cot on a slope? Does she prefer sleeping on an angle? Or get her a toddler pillow?

ShushBaby · 02/02/2011 21:35

belgian I'm pretty sure dd stopped waking up in the night after a long bout of waking, when we elevated the end of her mattress, and wrapped her up a bit warmer.

DD is 1 in a few days - she has between 10 and 11 hours at night and about 2 - 3 hours during the day (in 2 naps). I'd say that's around the same-ish as your DD.

Our 15 month old sleeps for about 12 hours a night 7-7 but hardly sleeps in the day.. Lucky if I get a nap of 40 mins- 1 hour.
She was never a great daytime sleeper but good at night.

valbona · 04/02/2011 14:03

exactly the same as you OP - 7 til 6ish then two naps in the day - 30 mins at 9ish and maybe an hour at 1 - she's never got the big 2-hour lunch nap thing. I shouldn't worry if I were you!
